I have traced some ancestors back to the 1840s who were buried in the grounds of the Congregational Church in Gatley, now demolished and currently the site of Gatley Golf Club?
Can anyone guide me to pictures of the church which form an important part of the family history?

Three Brothers Knight out on the road...almost!

Hi Gerry
I have a book called "Gatley. A pictorial history of the parish of St James the Apostle" which is a local history book done for the 100 year anniversary (1881-1981). Written and Compiled by Frank & Teretta Mitchell, published by St James Church
It has lots of old photos and maps etc. There is a little bit at the beginning with early history showing Tythe map of 1841 and a couple of pages of early history.
Later on there is a reference to the Congregational Church and a drawing the author did of it (taken from a reference photo of the church in 1870 found at Manchester Local History Library)
It says the church was built in 1779 - Gatley's first religious building. There was a sunday school and day school added in 1821, and a burial ground "in front of and to the right hand side of the chapel"....."since it was the only one in Gatley, many Church of England people were buried there as well as non-conformists".
The old chapel became too small for Gatley and was replaced by the new one in Elm Road in 1937.
Not sure if you would be able to find a copy of the book now (I got mine off a well known internet auction site ) but PM me if I can help with anything else...

Hi Jill, I also read our uncle's memories with pleasure. In one of them he mentions being outside the methodist hall listening to the brass band rehearsing. My grandfather played in the Gatley Prize Band - I think possibly very late 1920s - very early 1930s so perhaps he heard him play.
I was hoping the website may have some photos of the band at the time but no luck (I did post a message on their forum)
I don't suppose you have ever seen any photos have you?
