Hi,

My late mother-in-law was Antonia Ivy Boxall;  the family lived in King William's Town, South Africa.  I am not sure of the father's name, but there were three daughters - Antonia Ivy, Doris and Edith.  The only connection to the U.K. I have is a story about a Boxall relative who played the violin at a command performance for Queen Victoria in London;  his violin was a Stradivarius (it turned out to be a fake when we took it to Sothebys!) - this violin was later donated to a museum in East London, South Africa.

I have not looked in to how they came to be in South Africa;  I think they must have migrated sometime during the 1850's or later.  I do know that the father married a lady of German descent, one of the many German settlers who came to this area of South Africa at that time.

Ivy Antonia married Ronald Nettleton Gordon and they had two children, Raymond Garth and Margaret.
Hi Tisy;
Thank you for posting a message here.  I am finding the BOXALLs in South Africa very difficult to research.  I have various contacts all who are possibly related to each other being descendants from one BOXALL who emigrated in the 1800's and had quite a large family of mainly boys.  The trouble is knowing that I have not been able to really workout the descendants other than the fact there are numerous BOXALL descendants for this one man.  I'm guessing that maybe your Antonia Ivy BOXALL is also connected.

If you can possible find more information on this BOXALL family I would love to work out a connection to a BOXALL family in England.  Thank you for the details you have passed onto me.
Kindest regards
Ronnie

Hi Ronnie,

I will have a look at the death notices in the South African archives - if we can find any this will give us a heap of info on each individual.  I have a researcher in Cape Town who will go to the Archives and get a transcript for $10 Australian per death notice.  Get back to you later.

Cheers,

Hi again Ronnie,

I have found what I think might be your original man -

DEPOT:                   KAB (Cape Town Archives)
SOURCE:                 MOOC
TYPE:                      LEER
VOLUME No.            6/9/117
SYSTEM:                  01
REFERENCE:            3170
PART                        1
DESCRIPTION:          BOXALL, HENRY.  DEATH NOTICE
STARTING:                1866
ENDING:                   1866

The name of the researcher in Cape Town is Graham Lloyd and his email is lacey[at]yebo.co.za

I think this might be the place to start.  The death notice should list his place of birth, his parents, his spouse and children, plus where he died and whether he had property.

I have taken a note of every other Boxall death notice from every archive in South Africa and am in the process of typing up a list - it is beginning to show the beginnings of family groups.  There were 105 entries for Boxall in the Archives, some of which may be of interest to you later on - divorces, court cases, property transactions etc.
The prevalent names are Henry, Arthur, Edward, George, Edwin, August, Albert, William, Percival, Stanley, Herbert, Vincent, Geoffrey and Hugh.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,

Tisy

Hi Tisy,
You are wonderful.  You are the first person I've had contact with who could come up with any sort of information for South Africa.  I don't want to duplicate what you have already done, silly both of us paying for the same documents.
Please let me know what you are willing to share with me and I will assist with information from my extensive database.  It may be easier to share information by using our regular emails address.  I can be reached at:

Moderator comment: email address removed to prevent spam - Rootschat policy - please use the PM system to exchange such info securely

Percival is not a very common name in the BOXALL circles so this could indicate a possible family the same with Stanley and this would be the first Vincent and I only have one other Geoffrey.
As the information builds it is interesting to see family links coming to light also.  I look forward to working with you as you work on your BOXALL connections.
Thank you.
Kindest regards
Ronnie

Hi Sue;
Sorry for the delay in replying.  I have Sarah in my database but as of yet have not worked on that particular BOXALL family.  Could you send me more details on her Marriage as my Petersfield information ends in the very early 1800's and as of yet I have not had the opportunity to glean further information from the Internet nor have I managed to purchase many of the Hampshire Registers on Microfiche.  Would you by anychance have easy access to the Petersfield records and be willing to assist me in my research?

Hi Ronnie,

Thanks for your message. Unfortunately, I don't live near enough to make use of the Hampshire records office. The only details I have of Sarah Boxalls marriage to Charles Whiting are that they married by banns at St Peters, Petersfield on the 25/2/1813. Witnesses were George Whiting and Harriet Schoell. Sarah was from Petersfield. I think I have also e-mailed you on another site. So, apologies for that.

Best Wishes  Sue.

Hi Russell;
This John is a mystery, he is in the 1881 census  but then I can't find him.  When you have the wedding certificate can you send me the details, especially the name of his father.  Maybe with the name of the father I can figure out which John this is.

Sorry I don't have anything else at this time.

Hi Ronnie,
I have a Boxall right out on the far edges of my tree!  It is Mary, born about 1925 and married to a Stanley J Guess, in 1949 in Surrey North Western, wherever that is!
Does she figure in your archive?
Regards,
Ron

do you have a copy of the marriage certificate?  If so can you give me all the details especially the father's name and witnesses, and where the couples were living at the time if the marriage.  If I have those details I have a better chance of working out which Mary is yours.
Kindest regards
