hello List,
This is the first time I have posted on the NZ board so I am not sure if anyone can help...
I have just put together a grab bag of info relating to my William WYATT who came out from England ( Oxfordshire b Claydon) on the Alumbaugh ,18 August 1875, with his wife Anne and 3 daughters - Ruth Matilda WYATT b 1868, Mercy Albina WYATT b 1870 and Edith WYATT b 1873.
As a result of searching Paperspast tonight, I have discovered the family settled in Hamilton West. The 3 girls are mentioned as doing well at school and Ruth singing solos at the Wesleyan Church. I also learned that William was a shearer.
I have also discovered that Mercy Albina WYATT married Charles William PROUD around 1890 - they had at least one son , John William Wyatt PROUD b 1892 died 1959 in Auckland . I would love to know when the marriage took place and the names of any other children. Mercy died aged 84 in 1954 and Charles died aged 87 in 1957 - both are buried at Waikumete cemetery, Auckland.
The PROUD family were iron mongers and had come out to NZ in 1865 on the Resolute. George Bell PROUD was the father and died 1920. He had another son, George Welford PROUD, mariner who drowned when the Drummond Castle was wrecked off France in 1897. I know that George W PROUD had 2 children - George William PROUD b 1888 died 1959, a storeman in Otahuhu, and Beatrice Amelia PROUD b abt 1890- no other details although I suspect she married a Mr Heald as I found a probate record ( index only) for a John George Bell Proud HEALD in 1969 .He died 1969 aged 63 and was a railway worker
I do not know what happened to Edith WYATT but would very much like to!
Ruth Matilda WYATT was my great great grandmother who married James NOY and lived in Kawakawa, Bay of Islands until her death late 1904 - just a few weeks after her Dad died. Her parents, William and Anne WYATT are buried in Hamilton cemetery - 1903 & 1904 both aged 63.
Ruth had 5 children for which I have information. Her husband, James NOY ( b Cornwall UK) lived to 97 years of age dying in 1952 and is buried with Ruth in Kawakawa.
I would love to make contact with any of the WYATT /PROUD/HEALD descendents and would greatly appreciate any help in finding records for the abovementioned folk.
Kind regards
Kiwi007 ( in Sydney OZ)

WOW!!!
Thank you Delboy, Lucy and of course Kiwihalfpint!!
So much information and very good sources!
The PROUDs were in the molding business and George is George Bell PROUD who came out to NZ in 1865...so good to see him again in the electoral roll-along with the others
Re Beatrice Amelia PROUD - there may have been another daughter born after the family arrived in NZ who I am unware of - she may have married a HEALD perhaps.
I will dig about and see what I can find for a Beatrice ELLIS now we have that marvellous clue!
Wonderful to see what Mercy's husband did for a living too. I didn't think it possible to find so much out..
The WYATTs in Northland do look interesting especially as they lived in the same place as my NOY and Saies families...however, they may be cousins to my immediate WYATT family. I have traced the rest of William's siblings and Anne's as well and they all seemed to have stayed put in Oxford.
I would be interested in the Edith WYATT marriages if you could PM me with them - the girls did have middle names but rarely used them in the early days.Only Mercy 's keeps showing up on records. I don't have Ruth Matilda's marriage to James NOY yet so I wonder if she uses Matilda for that.
Now, I have to get home as its late here and I am just about crossed eyed with all this new info- I will start the cemetery searches tomorrow for Beatrice etc
many thanks again for all your fantastic help.
Kind regards Kiwi007

hi Lu,
Many thanks for the NOY marriage - I posted a message earlier this morning but it isn't on the board...it has vanished....
Since then, I found the death for Stephen and Beatrice ELLIS - they are buried at Waikumete, AKL,,he died 1947 and she died aged 70 in 1960.
I would love to know if they had children. He was 14 years older than Beatrice.
I also mentioned in the earlier post ( it may re-appear) that I dug up an old sheet of NOY info and in faint ink there is note that says Ruth Matilda WYATT had 3 sisters - Margaret, Ginny & Mercy. No mention of Edith - unless Edith was known by another name. If this is accurate, then 1 or 2 more daughters must have been born after the NZ arrival in 1875...maybe this explains the HEALD connection!!
Anyway, I will await the new info when you are up and about:-))
Cheers Kiwi007

Hi Kiwi
[Was just about to post the HEALD info].
Clever you ... well done on finding the ELLIS people.
I will see if I can find death notices for you, for Stephen and Beatrice.
Ruth Matilda's, WYATT sisters .... Mmmm - probably just two marriage possibilities to choose from (unless Margaret was a 2nd christian name). As for "Ginny" - usually a diminutive of "Virginia" ... but of course could be just a nickname ?? (No Virginia/Ginny on M/ Index).
I wonder if you went back to PapersPast and those articles (re: their schooling), whether you might find these other daughters - same school, but in later years ??

... possible marriages ?
Margaret Annie WYATT George William HALL Year - 1898 (Folio # 1382)
Margaret Jane WYATT Edgar James CHITHAM Year - 1912 (Folio # 0030)
"Ginny" ... Georgina ?? (In 1917 a Georgina May WYATT marrying a "JONES" ? Bit of a longshot though).

A bit more....
Just found the deaths of
Rita Phyllis HALLIDAY 1889- 1964- aged 75, buried with husband William HALLIDAY 1887 - 1972 at Hamilton cemetery
Also: Renee Bell DIGGENS 1898 - 1993 - Purewa Cemetery - aged 95! Possibly married William Livingston DIGGENS
Someone that intrigues me is Joseph Woods WYATT 1905- 1994 who is buried at Hamilton - Ruth Matilda's maternal grandfather was Joseph WOODS.
Must go, hopefully a few more clues will come to light!
Cheers Kiwi

HEALD
John George Proud HEALD - d. 1969 - buried Waikumete [buried in same plot - Clara HEALD - died 1965 aged 96] :
Probate record at Archives NZ (Auckland ) HEALD - John George Bell Proud - 1969 [Appears to be for the person of same name (above) - and occupations are same ]: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Sourced from funeral notice) ... John George Proud HEALD d. 23 July 1969, was the son of the late Clara and John HEALD. (The names of his sister and a nephew appear in notice). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is no marriage showing on NZ index for "a Clara and John". (Nothing either for a "Clara PROUD" marrying):
On FREE BMD UK there is a Dec. 1894 HEALD / WOOD marriage at Prestwich, Lancashire which looks a possibility - also the birth of a HEALD daughter (same place) which may be the dau/sister (have found her cemetery record for age comparison) ??
From "findmypast" website ... a HEALD family (near match for ages and names) arriving at Wellington NZ, 1899 ??
-----------------------------
So I think, despite the name on that probate record looking so promising, that this family is probably not connected. (But hey, I've been proven wrong before).
