Who was Joe from Forest Green?
« on: Friday 09 January 09 18:38 UTC (UK) »

My Grandmother, Daisy Mitchell, worked as a driver/chauffeur for a chap, whom we only know as 'Joe' (presumably Joseph), in the late 1920s or early 30s at Forest Green, near Abinger.  I am trying to identify him and his family (he was married with two daughters at the time) to help complete the picture of my grandmother's life.  He was presumably quite well-off and quite possibly had other staff too.  Joe died 1934-6  we believe from being gassed during WW1, but we have no idea where.  If you've any ideas on how to trace this man, knowing only his first name, I would be eternally grateful.

Do you think 'Joe' may have been well-enough-off to have had a telephone (Early phone directories)?

(Match up with deaths)

Or look at the electoral register of the time

Or a look through some local newspapers from the time for any clues

Perhaps a letter to the Letters page of the currrent local paper asking if anyone has any ideas.

Forest Green isn't very big now and was probably smaller back then.
Having a girlie driver in the 20s must have been practically unique in what was then very rural Surrey.

I'd start with the bigwig families of the day if I was you,

BRAY
EVELYN
MALTHUS
HILL

Also have a word with Matthew Alexander of Guildford Museum - he may well just know who you are talking about.
Or you could always try Shere Museum....
