Stewart family from Co Tyrone
« on: Saturday 10 January 09 17:15 UTC (UK) »

I am seeking any information on John and Jane Stewart (husband and wife) who moved from Co Tyrone to Co Durham in the mid 1800s.  John was born in Tyrone in 1811.

Not sure how to go about finding any more information.

Hi,
found a marriage of John Stewart to Jane Wolff on 9 Feb 1847 in Kildress Church of Ireland Cookstown. I also have a couple of marriages in 1848 of John Stewart to Mary Janes.

Many thanks for that!

I am not sure how to go about getting hold of Irish records or what they contain.  Of course I realise John Stewart is a common name - there is a possibility he may have moved to Northern Ireland from Scotland but I may not be able to prove that.

Does your record of the marriage to Jane, give any other details or please could you advise me where to go to find them out?

Thanks alot for your help.

Hi,
Irish records are notoriously sparce. Most official records ie census etc, had been destroyed in
WW1 or in the civil war in 1922.  Marriage records exist for Protestants from 1845 and for Roman Catholics from 1864 and for all births from 1864. Some church records still exist but as many did not start until the 1840s you need to know the religion of your ancestor and the Parish in which he lived and if you know the townland, even better. In Ireland we use what are known as census substitutes which only tend to list the head of house. These are lists such as the Flax Growers'register1796 or the Griffith's Valuation of 1848-1864. A gloomy picture for a newcomer to Irish Genealogy.
