Hi,
I am new to this and this is my first posting so please let me know if it's in the wrong place or anything else I may have done wrong.
I am trying to find a family member, whose DAUGHTER Alice Walker was born in Cambridgeshire. Therefore I assume that her mother, Susan Harriott, was also from this area (though she may not have been).
Susan married a man called Robert Walker and their children were Alice, Fraser, Margaret and Nelly.
If anyone can help me with my search it would be very much appreciated. Also, any hints or tips for searching.
I need tips too for searching Republic of Ireland records, as some of my family are from there.
thanks in advance
Laura Fergusson

Thank you all so much for your help. I was looking for a Susan Harriott (surname) but when I look at my records my aunt had written "something like Pallentine". Which would be right.
Am so grateful. Is this something I could have found myself? How can I get a copy of their marriage certificate? I have already spent quite a bit of money on false leads so any help gratefully received.
Thansk again
Laura

If you look on free BMD I clicked on marriages Put Robert Walker name in name of spouse I just put Susan
then I chose all districts -with a start date of 1895 -no finish date
and thats the marriage which seemed most probable.
Try it with children's birth reg
then I have found this 1881 census -you can look at this free on familysearch -you can also look at the IGI -for birth TATi found on familysearch
I'll give you details of 1881 -but check it yourself to get used to using the site 1881 65 York st Camridge henry Polendine head m 41 Cartman (Pensioner in army) b. Brinkley cambs Jane wife 42 lantrey Dock Cornwall Susan daughter 9 scholar Cork ireland henry son 7 scholar W Indies bermuda Francis son cholar West Indies bermuda Alfred son 2 Sypress Turkey RG11 1888 71 36 1
so it seems Susan's parents were English -but father was in the army and his wife must have travelled with him
You can order certificates n line from GRO cost of £7 use the ref no given on freeBMD

The IGI can be found on www.familysearch.org, along with the 1881 census transcription. Henry's age in 1881 was 41, ie birth c1840, and the IGI has a baptism of Henry Polendine on 17 Nov 1839 at Brinkley Cambs, which fits perfectly. His parents are named as James and Susan. A word of caution about the IGI. There are two types of entry - extracted, taken from parish registers, which are reliable; and member submissions which range in quality from well researched to pure fiction ie unreliable! You can see which it is by looking at the Messages box on the Individual Record page.
You also need to chec k out the Cambs FHS website at http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html which has census indexes and birth and burial indexes 1801-37, which you'll find invaluable once you get back to that era.
Good luck
David

Whoops sorry I had put Tati istead of tazzie - the nme of the user who posted the information from the IGI
The IGI = International Genealogical Index This is an index which has birth , marriages and deaths -not complete as it is being transcribed . it is free to view and is on the latterday Saints site . You always need to look on the IGI if it states the records are "Extracted" or "member submitted" Member submitted records are what a member of the LDS church has researched and then submitted -sometimes they are accurate -sometimes little more than a guess.
If you go to www.familysearch.org you can view the England/Wales 1881 census, the IGI and other things it is a free site It is a good idea to have a play around on theat site to get used to it.
Then there is freeBMD -for England /Wales Birthmarriages/Deaths -from when registration began Sept qtr 1837 -this is not complete as it is being transcribed by volunteers but most areas go up to late 1920's and are eing added to all the time
for census 1841- 1901 (ecluding 1881) they are on pay sites but someone onhere ill always do a look up for you if you ask
There are lots of other things for you to look at -bu I would start with family search and FreeBMD -and then ask again
I am trying to find Susan for you in 1891 at the moment
Of course you will need the marriage cert to confirm henry is her father - but it looks pretty convincing at the moment

Of course I would have checked
I have just got into this recently and have never found anything that is so engrossing. I could spend days solid doing this....I also cannot believe there are so many nice people who will help out there!
I have found the following in the 1861 census. How do I determine if they were related to Susan?
POLENDINE Eliza 41 Brinkley POLENDINE James 49 Brinkley
Sorry if I'm a bit slow at this....
