1901 Belturbet Donnelly Best
« on: Wednesday 09 February 05 17:54 UTC (UK) »

Married in 1901 at Belturbet Co; Cavan.

James Best and Alice Donnelly.

These were my ggrandparents. Little is known except that they lived in Lanarkshire until after WW1 when James and Alice returned to Belturbet where James died shortly after due to the effects of Mustard Gas poisening from WW1. Alice had a guest house in Belturbet with her daughters and son, James my grandfather who fled to England after a jewelry hiest possibly around 1920's.

Any information would be gratefully appreciated as although I have been looking, I cannot find any information to get me started.
Was James Best an Irishman from Cavan, or a Scotsman from Glasgow?
I do not seem to be able to find any trace of Donnelly's in Belturbet?

Thanks

Hi Mandy,

I did a look up for Donnelly of Belturbet in the Belfast and Province of Ulster Directory 1861. This is available at http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk

Donnelly, Peter, timber merchant, leather seller, iron monger, baker and grocer, Butler Street

This man may have a connection with Alice.

Your message makes me wonder if James was in the army and was pensioned off because of the Mustard Gas poisoning. If he was you may be able to trace him through his army records.
