Ballington/Barrington Queens County??
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 01:00 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Have just accessed the 1911 Census ( Grin Grin) to see that it states that my Great, great grandfather was from 'Queens Co, Ballington'?

Can't seem to find this place though, is it a transcription error?

Regards

Pablo

EDIT: I have attached the portion of the original. As can be seen, it seems to read 'Ballin---'. Any ideas?

A name might help find the place as seanmac suggests.
There's 2 townlands called Ballinlough but the handwriting sample doesn't quite match up. Also a Ballintogher (possible if the t wasn't crossed properly) but have a look at www.seanruad.com searching for townlands in Queens Co. beginning with 'ballin' and see what you think.

Hi,

Cheers for the suggestions.

Right, my Great, great grandfather was Patrick Hughes, born 1851 (according to UK Census returns, and this year is pretty consistent, with perhaps one 1850). His 1880 English marriage certificate states his father as being Laughlin Hughes.

Thanks. Will take a look at the townlands site as suggested.

This site for Griffith's Valuation (mid 1800s) might also help decipher the placename:

Thanks Aghadowey,

Have located Ballintogher on the SeanRuad site. Am I right in saying that the Townland is the smallest area of land?

Having looked at it again (admittedly, the scan quality's not the greatest), it looks like it could well be 'Ballintogher' without the 't' crossed as it looks like a 'g' overlaps the 'o', subsequently flowing into the stem of an 'h'...  Huh

Hi, new here and have just stumbled upon the above post, I realise it is old and there are MANY Patrick Hughes', but I too have a Patrick Hughes, Born 1851, married in 1880, and from 'Ballington' (sic).

He's my great great g'father....! PabloC if you've any more info I'd love to hear it! My chap was dock labourer and married Mary Vallely (sp?) from birkenhead..
