Marshalls of Addiewell and Bathgate
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 04:48 UTC (UK) »

My relatives lived in Addiewell, in Faraday place. I believe the head of the household was William Marshall, a foreman at the shale 'mine'.   There were a few sons and daughter aND his wife died keaving him there with the children.

I know little of his work or the family except that he is buried in Bathgate and that he died at 'St Olaf' in Torpichen St in Bathgate.  I do not know if St Olaf was a house or some form of institution so I would be happy if someone knew that.

Some of his family namely a son (Robert) left for Glasgow to work in enginerring.

Anyone who can cast light on the life, career and death of William or indeed the Marshall family thereafter Id love to hear.

Regards

There is another party interested in Faraday Place, scroll down your page and look for Poppylong, she has an ancestor living in Faraday Place too.

I have photos of Faraday Place today, its about the only houses left standing from that Industry, which was the Worlds first Oil Industry begun by James "Parafin" Young. You can have photos if you wish,

There was nothing on Torphichen Street Bathgate that could be described as an Institution, St, Olaf would be a private dwelling.

I don't know if it is the same family, but Marshall was the Green Grocer in Bathgate.

Thank you for this reply.  I think one of the daughters became a school teacher lcally probably in Stoneyburn or Addiewell.   I am told the father went on from foreman to be succesful in business but Im just trying to get a feekl for the family and what happened.  Any other contributions would be welcomed,. I did once go to Torphichen St in Bathgate to see what 'St Olaf' was but couldnt see anything that was possible. I wonder if the houses there are likely to have been there in late 1800s?

Note : Modification William Smith Marshall died at St Ola, Tophichen St, Bathgate in 1923. In the 1901 census he was staying with the family at 3 Faraday place, Addiewell.  I am trying to establish the whereabouts of the family between the 1901 census and date of death - any ideas?
