Robert Hollis
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 20:01 UTC (UK) »

I have an annoying issue. I wondered if someone could assist me with.

My dads father, William Hollis 1876-1934. Of St.Werburgh Derby according to my dad had a brother named Robert Hollis. This is where confusion rains. As I have accounted for all Uncles & Aunties Robert Hollis is not one of them. So, could he be brother to William Father, Frederick?
Somehow I don't think so.

My dad states his "Uncle Robert "lived in Matlock. (There is a photo of him in Army uniform WW.1.aged about 30yrs. incidentally, it's on Brett's photo of Derby.

My suggestion is, Robert Hollis was an cousin , to another Hollis family, but why do I have his photo?

Hi Fran
I have taken a quick look at the census records
William's mother Hannah Hollis is on the 1881 aged 36 and she is a widow.
Her children were:- Fred - William & Hannah.   Again in 1891 she has the same children with her and Fred is 17, Wm 15 and Fanny 13.
By 1891 she has re-married a much older man - Walter Shreeve.
From that I would say that she could not have had any children named Robert Hollis who served in WW1.  Robert would have been born probably in the 1890s or maybe in the 1880s if he was in is 30s in WW1 - at which time Hannah was already widowed and later called Shreeve not Hollis.
I strongly suspect Robert is a relatve and maybe a cousin.
I would recommend that you post the photograph you have of him in WW1 uniform onto the armed forces section of this website - from that we may be able to identify his regiment and even find a medal card for him or even a service record possibly - it would be a start anyway

Thankyou Cheshiremog. You have highlighted the exact findings I failed to mention in my opening query. I have followed Hannah Hollis, and her troubled life for some time.
I ha failed also to explain that I had some time ago brought Robert Hollis into this site. Many people were kind enough to identify his reg.ad many more things about him.

When I wrote that last email it was to clarify some old  family rumours of Robert being an Uncle. It is clearly wrong. I wondered if   (Robert's father) may have  been the brother to Hannah's 1st Husband Frederick Hollis.b.1842.d.1878.
Again my sincere thanks & apologies for any confusion.

I believe IF my theories are correct, the Trusley Hallowes were directly related to the St. Werbergh Hallowes.  There was a Robert Hallowes who live din Trusley and had a son named Robert who would have--given my theory--been a cousin (1st or second) of William of St.Werbergh.  Any thoughts on this are welcome.  You may email me directly at (*)

I'd love to trade info and/or theories.
