Henry Macdonald born Stirlingshire
« on: Friday 30 October 09 07:27 UTC (UK) »

My gg.grandfather was born in Stirlingshire in I think 1828.  He died in New Zealand in 1886 at the age of 58.  His father was also Henry Macdonald and his mother is listed on his NZ death certificate as Ann Macdonald nee Maikau.  I would love to be able to find a birth date for  my gg grandfather, also if anyone can give me any information on Ann Maikau it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Liz

Can you check up on Henry's mother's surname, please?  It doesn't sound Scottish.  The nearest that I've found so far  for the time period is Maiklum.  Two in Stirlingshire  - 1786 and 1800

1786 -  Baldernock. Parents - Peter Maiklum and Mary Millar
1800 - Kilearn. Parents - Archibald Maiklum and Jean Maiklum

Added - there are also some Maiklem and Maiky in different time periods  or it might even be a strange version of Mackie or McKay  Undecided

Hi, I agree it doesnt sound scottish at all.  This has been taken from a NZ death certificate for Henry Macdonald.  I dont know whether it is transcribed from something that would be handwritten or not, I presume it is so it could have been transcribed wrong.  Unfortunately have no way of checking as yet.  We had a bit of a laugh about it as it sounds like a Maori name, but havent been able to find the surname in anything that I have googled.  Your suggestions all sound very valid.  Have friend coming down for the weekend who is right into genealogy so I will see if she can shed any light on getting the surname confirmed or not.  Cheers Liz
