'bastardy records'
« on: Saturday 24 January 09 08:09 UTC (UK) »

Just wondered if anyone knew if there are records for Northamptonshire during / 1836
need or would like to find the father of one:

Charles A.Green born to Elizabeth in 1836 Brixworth Northampton.

Any help would be appreciated... Xinia

You need to look at the parish chest for Brixworth starting with the records of the overseer of the poor, the churchwarden constable and the vestry minutes.

The next place to look will be the quarter session records to which the church wardens would have referred any contested paternity case.  After 1750 uncontested cases were handled by JPs at the petty sessions which would have issued any maintenance orders but it is extremely unlikely that any records of these have survived.

The final possible source is the ecclesiastical court where the churchwardens may have presented the mother and in some cases names the father.

These records if they survive should be in Northamptonshire Record Office at Wootton Hall Park.
