I have just found an ancestor as an inmate of Wootton Hall. Please could someone tell me what this place was?
Many thanks,
Diana

Hi Pels
Thank you for the two links - very interesting, but they didn't mention an institution there. Perhaps I've made a bit of a mistake and maybe the institution wasn't actually at the Hall but close by. I guessed it might have been the Hall itself because the next door address in 1911 was the Lodge Gate to Wootton Hall.
I was wondering if it might have been the Workhouse or an asylum - should have looked more closely - and now that I've looked at a higher entry I can see someone whose occupation is Workhouse Matron, so I think I've answered my own question!!
Regards,
Diana

Hi Diana
I have transcribed some folk from the Workhouse in 1905 a copy is in the Northampton Central Library.
Is it one of your Bodsworth family.
I could see if they are mentioned if you like.
Just e-mail me.

Most of the Northampton history groups are centred around the record office which is in Wootton Hall Park. If you don't find a solution from other places contacting the archivist there would seem to be a good idea.

Thank you for your reply. I'm pretty sure now that the Institution was the Workhouse.

I am slightly concerned because I only remember Wootton Hall as the headquarters of the county police force where they moved around 1951. That was before it was merged with the town police force in 1966.
The main Hardingstone Workhouse was on the main Newport Pagnell Road from 1838 although some of the inmates actually went to the old Wootton Workhouse to work.

When I looked at the 1911 Census there was no address for the Institution, so I looked at the next entry, which was Wootton Hall Gatehouse. Maybe the gatehouse was near the workhouse and actually some distance from Wootton Hall itself. Next time I go to Kew to look at the Census I will take another look to see if I can identify anything more about the Institution to be sure it was the Workhouse.
Many thanks for all you efforts.

I went back to Kew today and looked at the 1911 Census again. The address on the transcript is The Hardingstone Union Workhouse, Wootton.
Thank you everyone who got involved with this request for help.
