Hello, Can anyone help me find Philip (1835) and james his brother (1839) and Lilly (!843) Ross, they were the children of Lily Munro and Peter Ross. Peter married later to a Margaret Bain and they had one child Isabella, the latter is my great grandmother. However, I am trying to find Peter's parents and the children of his first marriage. Rosskeen and Fearn seem to be the two places they all lived...although Isabella left at some point between 1851 and 61 and eventually made her way down to York.

Being new to this please tell me what do I do to find this info...I search on Scotlands People but cant find the info...is there another site that I can use to get started and then go back to verify info??

As to the birthplace being different its very possible that edderton is right as Lily was Peters first wife...he may then have moved and hence why his next child Isabella was born at Fearn.

I use www.ancestry.co.uk which is a subscription site

Here they are on the 1861 - still in Rosskeen

Hi Carole, A mine of information...this is wonderful...oh it does seem a possibility for James but....strange that the people he is with are also called Ross...although I do appreciate there are a lot in the immediate area....another avneu to research now... Smiley

Thanks for the info about the one you use...shall get joined up...

was looking at getting some family tree software...can I ask on the forum and where should I put the question as to asking for opinions on what people use?? what do you use??

I am getting so hooked on this subject...did have a try some years ago but that was when the internet didn't offer as much as it does today..and would mean traipsing round the country...went to St Catherine's house a few times...but pandemonium there with loads of people all scurrying around pulling out all the black book's...although it was enjoyable in one way....I must admit I prefer this method of searching at least your not run of your feet when you go down the wrong alley!! Wink

Hi

I have always used Family Tree Maker as I find it a very easy programme to use.  I have upgraded as new versions become available but find that the 2005 version currently meets all my needs

There are later versions but you can pick up the 2005 version for about £10 online

I have just found a Philip Ross b 1836 Scotland (unmarried) working as a groom for the Blinkinsop family (lawyer) in Walton on Thames Surrey in 1861
RG9; Piece: 421; Folio: 48; Page: 37

I'll check later censuses to see if it gives a more specific birthplace

well thats interesting as Peter's second wife Margaret ahd a daughter called Isabella born about 1853 and she moved to York but dont know when,assume after Peter died in 1870...as she married a Henry Palfreeman in 1876...

I think Philip died in 1863.  There is nothing on the 1871 for England or Scotland

Deaths March qtr 1863   

Philip ROSS      Chertsey  2a 17

I have checked the 1861 again and the Philip Ross b Scotland was the only one of that name in Surrey

Chertsey registration district covered the Walton on Thames area which is where that Philip Ross was living in 1861

oh wow! no where is this leaving me...another avenue...an interesting one...and many thanks for this Carole!...I just wish I could find these things...I have spent today searching for different things and I get nowhere...is there something I am missing when I do it?....thank goodness for people like you..I read through some of the other posts and have begun to realize this is really quite a complex subject and there are ways to do it and a few good people who are able to do it...well...nevertheless I am still enjoying it and aiming to do better!
