Hi...I've just found the names of the parents of my gggrandfather, Alexander McKenzie who was born in 1826 in Golspie, Sutherland. Alexander's death certificate names his father as Donald McKenzie and his mother as Catherine Munro. Alexander and his wife, Margaret Jane Tully migrated to Australia in 1855, where some of their children were born around the Bacchus Marsh area near Melbourne. I would love to know of the siblings of Alexander, or any of the family of Donald or Catherine. Any help would be just wonderful. Warmest wishes Rap

Hello, Many thanks for responding to my posting...I took your advice and had a look at the beautiful photos of Loth and Kildonan...where my McKenzie family originated. The Loth church is just wonderful, isn't it?......I put it into full screen and sat looking at the portal, trying to imagine Alexander and his new bride Margaret walk through those doors! I live in southern Victoria on the coast (down the right-hand bottom side of the continent) and was born on Phillip Island....I can't believe how like the Victorian countryside, Sutherland is...well, apart from the stone fences, you would think that Loth was southern Victoria as they share the same undulated hills, paddocks, and rural scenery. Maybe the early pioneers were lured here to Australia with the promise of it being 'just like home'.....although I don't think that the winter temperatures would be similar....a winter here is cold if it's 5 degs. and we only get snow more north in the Victorian Alpine areas. I also enjoyed seeing the graveyards of Kildonan, as many of the McKenzies lived around that area...so I'm guessing that through the ages, some have been buried there. Scotland and Ireland are on my 'to do' list when our children are finished school, and we can begin to travel again. I'd love to see where my ancestors came from and do a little more 'digging' for church records! I've found the death place of Alexander 1826, and have located his grave. I know that it may seem a little silly, but I've downloaded a print of the Loth Church, and when we travel to find his resting place, I intend to leave the picture along with some flowers.....a little bit of 'home' for his poor soul!
Many kind thanks for your time and interest: it's much appreciated. Rosie.

Hi Rap,
I also have McKenzies, but from Assynt Sutherland, in my tree and I can not recommend highly enough the Sutherland group. www.countysutherland.co.uk It has a fantastic wealth of information.
There are two mailing lists County Sutherland and Australia to Sutherland It is worth joining both and everyone is so willing to help.
To view the burial grounds records complete with headstone photos , there is a small, once only fee. These records have been invaluable for me.
You never know we may find our McKenzies are connected.
Best Wishes Robyn

Hello Elizabeth....lovely to hear from you! I'm sure that we have a connection here with our McKenzie lines somewhere!....I'm afraid that I haven't been able to establish much of my McKenzie line back in Loth and Kildonan, apart from my gggrandfather Alexander b 1826 and married Margaret Jane Tully b1925...they married at Loth in 1854...I've seen a photo of the church, and it looks wonderful! All I know I'm afraid is that, from Alexander's DC, his father was Donald, and mother Catherine nee Munro, birthplace Golspie....so it's quite likely that your line fits in here somewhere...how, I have no idea at this stage. Do you know of any registrations for births in the Sutherland area Elizabeth?. I'm sure that my Alexander had siblings, and Donald as well....is there any place that you can suggest to look to find this family? It would be wonderful to put all of this together Elizabeth, wouldn't it? Best wishes Rap.

Thankyou so much Firthview for finding the siblings of my Alexander!!!.....I never thought that I would ever have any hope of finding them! Are births in Scotland this early actually recorded somewhere?...or do you have a secret insight (like a friend in records?) I know that records here in Aust really don't go earlier than 1837...and my search for early dates in Ireland have been fruitless...hence my anguish not being able to find the McKenzies in Scotland either!
This is just wonderful, and I thankyou so very much for your time and effort! Best wishes, Rap.

Now with the siblings of Alexander found, I'm off to check shipping here along with BDM to see if any of these siblings made it to Australia as well.....just when I thought the 'brick wall' was too big....something always turns up, thanks to you kind folk!!
Thankyou and best wishes Rap.

Hi, I saw your message log on roots, and had to contact you. I am married to one of the Alexander Duncan McKenzie decendants. His Father is Noel John McKenzie, Son of Ernest Fredrick McKenzie, Son of Charles Henry Russell McKenzie, Son of Alexander Duncan McKenzie and Margaret Jane Tully, who came to Australia in 1855. Charles Henry was born on board "Hastings". My Husband is Mac John McKenzie. Our son Aiden James Luurt McKenzie (born 2006) is the next generation of McKenzie's from this line. It was great to see you have information of Donald McKenzie & Cathryn Munro. We couldnt track back that far, as we didn't have Alexander Duncan's parents' names. We also don't know when / where he died, as this is not registered on our paperwork, Do you have any idea? We know they lived in the Bacchus Marsh area.
