My broadband disconnects
« on: Friday 16 January 09 09:39 UTC (UK) »

I have Tiscali broadband and Windows Vista which works fine most of the time. But if I leave my computer for a while I very often find on returning that  the connection has dropped off and I just can`t find out why this happens as I am able to restore the connection right away. I would appreciate some help with this problem.

aberdein - warning I'm not a techie, but do you have a setting that times out - I'm on XP so this might need translating. Under Control Panel there's an option for network connections - if you select yours (probably Tiscali broadband) and look at the various settings & options in there there may be one for "time out". If this has a time limit on it this may be why the computer disconnects in your absence.

Broadband modems which draw their power via the USB port can often get disconnected if the power-saving function of the USB port is switched on.  If the computer connects to the router via a plug which looks like a phone plug, then it's a case of changing either the router settings or maybe the settings of Vista, but I would plump for the former.

Have a look here:

In Internet Explorer

TOOLS >> INTERNET OPTIONS >> CONNECTIONS >> SETTINGS >> ADVANCED

Uncheck those two boxes:

Disconnect if idle for xx minutes
Disconnect when connection may  no longer be needed

I`ve looked at Internet Options and the two boxes are already unchecked. I don`t have a router just the modem supplied by Tiscali. I can`t find anything on Vista Control Panel that relates to the problem. There is no regular pattern to the disconnections and on an odd occasion it won`t disconnect at all. There are two green lights on the modem which light up on booting the computer up and they always remain on even though I am not actually on line. It never disconnects when I am actually using the computer. Thank you for your interest and suggestions

The green lights on the modem remain on whether you are connected or not - it doesn't mean that you are actually connected to the Internet.

In Vista go to Control Panel and go to Power Settings - on my laptop it's under Mobile PC.

Within power settings you can make several adjustments to the "Power plan" selecting "Advanced" will allow you to make further adjustments including the USB ports.

Is it possible that your ISP is disconnecting you if they see a period of inactivity
