Anastasia White COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 10 February 05 08:39 UTC (UK) »

Hello all!
I have an Anastasia White in my family tree. She was born in Cullen, Kilkenny, abt. 1834, and emmigrated to Australia we're not sure when. Can any kind soul tell me anything about this person please? For instance, who her parents were, her exact date of birth, and whether or not she had brothers and sisters?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
tyr

Hello tyr,

What denomination was Anastasia White?

It may be difficult to find records as Civil Registration of births, deaths and marriages in Ireland didn't commence until January 1st, 1864 although compulsory civil registration of non-Roman Catholic marriages began on April 1st, 1845.

If Anastasia died in Australia her death certificate might give information about her birthdate and place, parents' names, etc. Also, if she married in Australia it would be worth checking her marriage certificate for details.
To do research in Ireland you have to know what religion the family were and where they lived (parish if not townland not just county) then see if the church records for that period survive.

Hi tyr,

I'd say that Cullen, Kilkenny is adequate.

I wonder if that might be Callen rather than Cullen.

Several townlands in Kilkenny have 'cullen' in the name: Coolcullen, Kilcullen, Cullentraugh for example. There's also a Cullaun but not townland called Cullen or Callen but there are three Callan. See www.seanruad.com to find townlands and parishes in Ireland (be sure to change default setting from exact match to search for part of a name).

Did you know that.To celebrate the Australian Bicentenary in 1988.for Irish emigrants to Australia were presented to the Austalian Goverment and can now be found in Many state archives.
For obvious reasons, the records relating to free settlers are more scattered and less easy to research.
The University of Woolongong has produced,on microfiche, a complete index and transcript of all information concerning immigrants of Irish origin recorded ships passenger lists between 1848-1867.
Often recording the exact place of origin as well as parents names.
Maybe it would be helpful if you asked about Anastasia White for help  from one of our Australian friends.Just a suggestion Smiley Lep

Hello

I am a bit surprised because my husband wrote the original message back in 2005!  We are a bit more experienced now and would not ask such wide ranging questions.  I feel quite embarrassed about it!

thank you for your help.

Kind regards
