Topic: Burton on Trent or Winshill? (Read 1387 times)

Have just found a family on the 1911 census described as living at 96 Church Hill St, Burton on Trent but the householder has written in 'Winshill' for the postal address. They were initially in Winshill but at some stage moved to B on T, can someone who knows the area tell me which this is please?

Thanks, that was an interesting link, I knew about the breweries as one grandfather worked for one but no idea which. Will see if I can find a town map to see just where the road was

Thanks all, that is fine, I have now found the street on a map via Google but named only on the large scale version, nice to have confirmation. It's a funny area as it sometimes gets Staffs and sometimes Derby, interesting to see what is in which, all this SHOULD be good for my geography

I live in Winshill, just round the corner from Church Hill Street! We have the original Deeds to our house, which was built in 1881. Winshill was originally a village in Derbyshire, although it is now a suburb of Burton upon Trent. The Staffordshire/Derbyshire border is currently about half a mile away on Newton Road, so we are only just within the boundaries of Burton upon Trent.
Sadly, these days, Winshill is synonymous with a very large council estate of ill repute, although Church Hill Street and the street where I live are in the original village.
Stapenhill, also now a suburb of Burton, also used to be in Derbyshire!

Early in researching a branch of my Newtons, I got caught by the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border thing. I couldn't understand why my ancestor's first wife's death was registered in Derbyshire when they were living in Burton. It soon became clear when I did a bit of research on registration boundaries!!
