Elizabeth Eliza Atkins & Arthur Goodearl, 1870's

Marriage - CUTLER/CATTON
« on: Saturday 17 January 09 22:33 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

The 1911 census has thrown up alot of info for me...
One of my [very] distant relatives Caroline Cutler was married to Joseph Amos Catton on 25 December 1888. Whilst they lived together in the 1891 census, how would it come to be that they are not together on the 1901 and the 1911? I can't, in fact, even find him in the country for 1901 and on any outbound passenger lists...

But i was able to track him down on the 1911. He was living in Camberwell, London, a boarder to a Mrs. Harriett Denyer and her son, along with Harriett's sister and Joseph's sister Agnes and [presumed] niece, Gertrude [Agnes] Catton.

But the strangest thing of all is that Joseph regards himself as a Widower... whilst his wife was very much alive back in Lane End, looking after her orphaned nieces and nephews.

So why would he call himself a widower? And why would they not be living together? It seems as if Joseph stayed on in Camberwell; his death is recorded there March qtr. 1940, whilst his wife stayed on in Lane End, where she died on 31 August 1945.

I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this strange situation?

Thanks
Matt.
