Help with 1841 census
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 00:32 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I am looking at the 1841 census at Sarah Morley b 1825 Stockport
I have found her aged 15 Thomas Street Stockport living with:
James Holland aged 60 b Stockport
Ellen Morley aged 30 b Stockport
Esther Vernon aged 20 b Stockport

My query that I could do with some help is do they round the ages up or down in 1841?
I have found Esthers marriage to a John Vernon she was Esther Holland
I cannot find a marriage for Ellen Morley but it would have been pre 1837 - I am presuming she was also a Holland and am also presuming Ellen is Sarahs mother. I feel James Holland is the father of Ellen and Esther.  Can anyone give me any clues to confirm this?
Many thanks

ages are supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years - except for children under 15.

As no relationships were given in 1841 there is no way of knowing what the relationships were on that particular census.

have you looked to see if the births/marriages are on the IGI?

Or tried to find them in parish records?

have you located these people on 1851 census -? That may give further clues

Also you state they were born Stockport - do you know this from another source?? 1841 only gives "Yes" or "no" related to whether they were born in the county (not the town or village)they were living in or not -in this case Cheshire

Not sure that this helps, but I can't seem to find any of the family in 1851!

www.cheshirebmd.org.uk shows:

Sarah Ann VERNON born 1840 Stockport First mother's maiden name HOLLAND

Hi Jean and Suzd

Thanks for the info and help all has been revealed I managed to find the info from a family tree of someone elses which tied it all together my suspicions were correct
Ellen was Sarahs mother and James was Ellen and Esthers father.
Whats more the tree I found and the owner I contacted had photos of them too!
Thanks again for your help
