Passenger Lists of People going to Africa about 1902
« on: Tuesday 29 September 09 18:13 UTC (UK) »

How would I find a passenger list of people going from Glasgow  to Africa to work in the Kimberly Diamond Mines.  My grandfather John Meffen went there approximately early 1900's.  He went with a man called Willie Wilson.

Thanks

Hi Fintry Girl,
My grandparents went to the Calabar in Nigeria in 1895, then to Canada at the turn of the century and to New Zealand in 1909.
I found all the records on FindmyPast - at the bottom of the page are listed passenger lists.
They seem to work about face to Ancestry - that has lists of people arriving in the UK but Findmypast has lists only of those going out.
I don't have a subscription so had to buy credits but the search system is good and you can be pretty sure if it's the right record before you commit your credit.
Good luck,
Maggie

Hi Maggie,

Tried that website with no luck about my grandfather, John Meffen.  But it did prove useful for another relative.  Thanks again I'll keep trying, there seems to be a lot for the USA but not much for Africa, but I'm sure there must be because according to my Mom a lot of men went to the Diamond Mines in the early 1900.s

There was a miner listed as John Mellen, 39, on the Afric bound from Liverpool to Cape Town on 24 November 1904 - might that be him perhaps?

I pretty sure this is not him because he was born in 1880 and was in his early 20's when he went to Africa, around 1900 to 1903.

Thanks for trying

Was he a carpenter? There is a John Meffen, carpenter, coming back from Cape Town to London on the Tintagel Castle in March 1905. There is a WR Wilson , joiner, on the same voyage.

Hi ShaunJ,

Yes he was a carpenter, in fact he was a carpenter and a carpenter foreman with the Singer Sewing Machine company for over 40 years.  That would be him.  He contracted malarias in Africa and had to come back.

Thanks, now I going to try and find him going there.

Regards
Rita
