I am trying to trace the parentage etc. of John Langford. According to the 1841 Census he was born in Berkshire and he died in 1846 at the age of 54 (death certificate), which would put his birth around 1792. It is possible that he may have spent some time in Oxford where he may have met Ann Steane who became his partner (I have been unable to trace a marriage) before settling in Abingdon. According to the Abingdon St Helen's PRs they had 5 children who were baptized as follows: STEANE, George Langford Wise (1828) Called George Langford WISE when he died in 1832 STEANS, Caleb Langford Wise (Ann's original family name, or may be trans.error) (1830) LANGFORD, James (1834) Called James Langford STEANE when an adult LANGFORD, Joseph (1840) Called Joseph WISE when an adult
Just to confuse things a bit further, the whole family was called LANGFORD in the 1841 Census, and Ann's Death Certificate refers to her as Ann Langford, formerly Steane.
I may be able to account for the different names as follows, but I have no proof!! The Steane surname was used because they were probably illegitimate and that was their mother's maiden name. Langford was their father's name and Wise may have been their paternal stepfather's name, because according to the IGI one Sarah Langford of Sutton Courtenay, near Abingdon had 2 illegitimate sons, one of whom was John b 1792. In 1806 she married a William Wise.
Lastly, I would like to trace the birth of Thomas John (or John Thomas) Steane, believed born in Oxford in 1807 who I think was Ann's brother. Their father was John Steans and their mother was Sense/Hannah Wilford. They were both from Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire.

Dear Sue,
I can't thank you enough for the information which you have retrieved for me, I have been chasing John & Ann for a very long time. The Oxford Steanes include Ann's uncle and cousins, I think, but have yet to prove. The 2 brothers (I assume) originally came from Husbands Bosworth.
The two Langford brothers I had already found on the IGI, but it was nice to get confirmation, as there were many Langfords & Wises in the Abingdon area at the time.
Must go now, as my house elf has my tea waiting!
