Salford Census pre-1861 - TWEMLOW
« on: Thursday 10 February 05 12:10 UTC (UK) »

I have traced Richard TWEMLOW (b. ca. 1812 in Salford) back through successive Censuses from 1901 to 1861.

In 1861 he was resident at 52 Cross Lane, Salford with wife Elizabeth (nee ROTHWELL, b. ca. 1807 in Bolton) and daughter Mary (b. ca. 1841 in Pendleton).  His occupation was given as 'Lancashire County Court High Bailiff' and I also know that in 1847 he was a Barrister's Clerk.

Their son, another Richard TWEMLOW (b. 18 Dec 1847 at 27 Cross Lane, Salford) was a Boarder at Strawberry House, Brunswick Road Academy, Salford in 1861.

The family had close connections with Pendleton and were active members of the New Brunswick Chapel where Richard (1812) was Sunday School Superintendent for a number of years.

There is yet another Richard Twemlow (DoB unknown) who married Elizabeth MORETON at Manchester Cathedral on 29 Apr 1806.  I believe he is the father of Richard (1812) and his sister Elizabeth (b. ca. 1816 in Pendleton);  certainly I know from the 2nd Marriage certificate of Richard (1812) that his father was a Richard who, in 1883, was listed as 'Lawyer's Clerk', deceased.

Any additional information on any of these Twemlow's, or indeed any other Twemlow's in Salford (particularly Pendleton) in the early 19th Century most gratefully received!

Many thanks.

Probably no connection but my mother b. 1912 had a school friend or early work colleague called Fanny Twemloe...I still have her wedding photo somewhere! Bestie

Here are your Twemlow's in 1851:

Is New Brunswick Chapel the same as Brunswick Methodist, Broad St? If so, I remember it from the 1970's.

Bingo!  I am so grateful for your info on Richard T and family.  At least it tends to confirm that there were no other children (although that's quite a big gap in age between Richard and Mary for the 19th Century!!).  Yes, Brunswick Chapel was originally Wesleyan but became Methodist at some stage - now pulled down, I believe.

Many thanks for the second tranche - unfortunately not related to the Richard's as far as I can tell at present.  However, worth some further research on my part.

Thanks again.

Probably an impossible question, as I guess you were looking at an Index rather than the original page.  If you do happen to have access to the original page, could you check whether NAVLEY could be HAWLEY as this would be a better contender.

No worries if you can't help - I guess I'm due a trip to Salford Library soon!!!

Hi Granpa,

I'm working from a transcript of the original pages. This is from the unfilmed, water damaged section, transcribed by members of the Manchester and Lancashire Family History. I understand the originals were in very poor condition and they had to use ultra violet light to read the worst parts, so I would guess it's quite likely that there are some errors.
I think this is the only form that exists, apart from the originals at Kew, so you might not get anything any better at Salford library.
