From Historical Directories 1914 I found the following
Ursuline Convent Nantwich Road Crewe
If you Google this, you will find that the building has been converted into flats and there are lots of pictures in estate agents ads etc. It looks very grand!

I wonder why the estate agents don't mention that after the convent it became the Cheshire Constabulary Training College. However it is still a magnificent building and appears to be sympathetically being converted. Kathb

Glad you could find a picture of the Convent. The internet is brilliant for putting "leaves on a family tree"
I have just found a picture of the house where my great aunt was cook in the 1911 census. It brings it all to life to be able to see where relatives lived and went to school.

I don't want to put a spanner in your works but I think you need to double-check your info and your house number. The Ursuline Convent is on Nantwich Road but it is no where near number 134. The numbers may have changed over the years but I do not think by that much. Also it was changed to the Police Training College and now into apartments - but I am sure it was never a factory. Number 134 is near to the junction with Ernest Street and there are some big houses there which could well have been a school. There was also Stratton House School but that was the other side of the road. I will try to find out some more if I can.

The Ursuline Convent is still shown on Google Earth. Follow Nantwich Road in a westerly direction to the junction with Salisbury Avenue - the convent is the big corner building to the west side of Salisbury Avenue.

There were 2 commercial premises in Francis Street when I was a lad:
On the corner of Francis Street and Nantwich Road was Slack & Mickle's motor garage - the petrol pumps and showroom fronted Nantwich Road and the garage workshops extended most of the way down Francis Street. Next to this was McQuorquodales Printing Works - which I think is still a printing works. The engineering shop in Edward Street was Denton & Tapley which I also think is still there.
No. 134 is a big house on the corner of Nantwich Road and Ernest Street and I am fairly certain that this may have been a school. The 1901 census is a bit vague but indicates that 136 is a school but it may have covered both addresses.

Hello CoxDodds,
You mentioned Chester and I know that there was an Ursuline Convent School there for many years. The buildings are still there but no longer a school.
I wonder if your grandmother could have attended that school as well in view of the family legend? Could the 2 schools have been connected?
Jo.
