Hi I need some fresh ideas as where to look for my Ancestor's business's. On the 1911 census it has Fanny Bailey as a costumier and her brother Henry Bailey as an italian warehouseman? and they were employers, any idea's.
They lived at "Parkfield" russell rd Moseley.
thanks. Ness Cheesy

Are you hoping to find them in previous censuses, or find where the business was located and if there is something still left of it today?

I hope someone with local knowledge or some bright ideas will be along to help, but in the mean time have you checked here?:

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/

Not that it helps to locate it's whereabouts today.  Undecided

They lived at "Parkfield", on Russell Rd - do you think they also ran the business from there, or did they have premises elsewhere?

In the 1901 census are they at the same address?

I don't think it would be possible to do this with the 1911 census as it's pay to view, but you could do it on the 1901 if they are at "Parkfield" -:

To try to work out where a place is, you can visit the neighbours. Find your ancestors on the census, then go up and down the street, making a note of residences until you eventually come across a building or landmark that still exists today.

Then you can compare this to a modern map and also try to find the location on old maps www.old-maps.co.uk/. Houses are sometimes even named.

A lot of places are unrecognizable today, mores the pity - specially those in cities.

Good luck!

Local guy - perhaps 2 miles from Russell Road.  Certainly still exists as you probably know already from Multimap.  Runs alongside Cannon Hill Park....as far as I can picture its a residential road, so 'Parkfield' sounds like the name of a house.  By the looks of the houses, many of which are large, its been a nice residential road at some stage.  Not sure I would have said that of the Ladywood address.  I don't know King Edwards Road, but a lot of Ladywood has slowly been cleared to make room for things like city centre apartments, National Indoor Arena, Symphony Hall etc.  There was a King Edwards School at Camp Hill, on the edge of Ladywood, which moved out of the city centre in the 1950s...so my guess is that the road was lost at the same time.

thankyou so much Oliver2008, yes "Parkfield"was the name of the house, i was thinking of sending a letter to the people who live there now to see if they may have any info on "The Bailey" family who lived there. i also have a photo of the house but problem is on the 1911 census it has 2 address's so not sure which one it is. My great uncle wrote that the address was "Parkfield" russell rd mosley and on the transcript it has 61 salisbury rd kings norton?

Moseley was part of the parish of Kings Norton. Salisbury Road is another road in Moseley.

I think that there is a chance that your family may have had a business in or near the centre of Birmingham. It's not far from Moseley.

Or they may have actually been in Moseley, which was a shopping centre,as well as a fairly high class residential area.

I wondered what, exactly, might be meant by an 'Italian warehouse' ~ and I found these references:

Thanks Tricia, yes an Italian warehouse man and it say's on the 1911 census that he was an employer?  but cant find a thing about him (Henry Bailey) or sister Fanny who was a costumier who also had her own business. so could have been in mosley or Birmingham. Do you think i should try and contact current owners incase they may have any info? Ness  Huh

A lot of the big houses along there have been sub-divided into flats, so, if it is one of those, you may be out of luck

I found some more references to Italian warehouses. I hadn't known that that had been such a fixture of society ~ in fact, I had never heard of them. However, there seems to have been a connection with tea and with ice cream. Cadburys was a tea merchant and there was a thriving Italian community ~ including those who sold ice cream.

I recommend that you have a look at the book 'Bella Brum', about Birminghan's Italian community and see if it contains anything that might be helpful:

The ice-cream vendor is the archetypical image of Manchester's Little Italy as Ancoats became known as. In 1801 an ice room was opened at Mary Jozeph's Fruit and Italian Warehouse on Market Street, paved the way for the ice cream trade by introducing ice cream to Mancunians. By 1891, 70 Italians living in Ancoats were working as ice-cream vendors, according to De Felici.

Mary says her auntie Philomena Valente also had an ice cream business on the opposite side of Moor Edge to theirs."Further along from the ice cream shop was Maffens Italian warehouse where you bought all the pasta, conserves and everything needed for a slap-up Italian meal."

4. Mr Grinder kept a shop in the Bethnal Green Road. It was announced in brilliant lettering as an ‘oil, colour and Italian warehouse’ and there ... he sold pots, pans, kettles, brooms, shovels, mops, lamps, nails and treacle.
