Castleconnor, Sligo
« on: Tuesday 15 January 08 21:48 UTC (UK) »

Can you please help me. Huh

I am trying to trace my Father's birthplace etc. He was killed in 1945 when I was 4 days old.

I have a corner of a letter with the following written on it :-
        45 Castletown
             Castleconnor
             Ballina

I do not know if the '45' is a house number or the end of the date.

Please, is there / was there such an address?  I have looked on road maps and on Google Earth and not found a street name or village 'Castletown'.

If it is a correct address, could you please tell in which Roman Catholic Parish it is in?

I do not know where to go to find out any more information, and cannot afford to come to Eire on a wild goose chase.

Getting desperate,
Listerdale

Hi this is my first message on rootchat so  excuse if I step outta line.
It appears as if your a long time without an answer.

There is a Castletown just below Enniscrone  (sometimes spelt Inishcrone) in Sligo.
I'm not 100 percent about what parish you'd be looking for. I guess it's Castleconner. Maybe even Kilglass.

Thank you for the information, it is over a year since I made this posting.

I have found Inishcrone on my Irish road map, but cannot see a Castletown.  I will look on Google Earth this evening to see if it shows on the map.

Regarding your first posting, we we all have to start somewhere, and you may have been very helpful  Smiley as Inishcrone does not appear to be that far from Castleconner and Ballina, the other two places in the address.

Thanks again,

Castletown is just north-west of Corbally in the parish of Castleconor, Co. Sligo.  If you look at the 1850s Griffiths Valuation maps here:
http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_start.php
and search for 'Cottlestown' you'll find it - and it appears as 'Castletown' on the modern map but you do have to zoom right in before it shows up as it is tiny.  The castle is labelled O'Dowd's Castle on the Griffiths Valuation map.  I believe this is the Castle that gives the parish (Castleconor) its name.
