BEBB of Glamorganshire, Monmouthshire and Montgomeryshire
« on: Monday 19 January 09 14:18 UTC (UK) »

My great granddad was Richard Howell Bebb born in Bedwellty,  Tredegar, Monmouthshire in 1862. By the 1880's he had moved to the Ystradyfodwg region of Glamorgan working as a collier. In 1888 he married Ellen Jane Thickins (who died in 1896) . On the 2nd October 1897 Richard a widower by then married Louisa Maud Jones at the Salem Welsh Baptist Chapel, Hannah St, Porth, Glamorgan. At that time his occupation was listed as a block-layer living at 5 Horeb Street, Treorky, Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan. After the marriage to Louisa they were living at Under 104 High Street, Treorky, Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan. By this time Richard was working as a colliery wagon repairer & above ground worker for the Parc Colliery, at the Cwmparc end of Treorchy. The colliery later became the the Parc and Dare colliery after it was amalgamated with the Dare colliery in the 1950's.

Richard's father was John Bebb born in Dukestown, Tredegar, Monmouthshire in 1834. In 1855 John married a Rachel Howells at Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Besides Richard Howell their other children were John born 1857, William born 1859, Thomas born 1865, Edward born 1867, Joseph born 1869, Benjamin born 1871, Jane born 1875 and Mary Elizabeth born 1877. All of the children were born in Tredegar apart from John who was born in Penydarren, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Richard Howell's father John was also a miner. John died in 1889 in Glamorgan.

John's father was Richard Bebb born in Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire in 1809. I found Richard in the 1841 census in Tredegar, Monmouthshire  working as an iron miner. By the 1851 census he had become a coal miner, still remaining in Tredegar. On the 1841 census Richard was married to a Cathrine, who I believe was a Cathrine Tibbot/Tybbot also born in Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire in 1808. Their other children besides John were Mary born in 1831 in Llanbrynmair, Elizabeth born in 1837, William born in 1841 (died Kingston, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, USA) and Catherine born in 1846. All of these other children like John were born in Tredegar.

Richard's father was William Bebb born in Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire on the 21st of October 1787. He married a Mary Evans who was born in 1780 in Monmouthshire. Besides Richard their other children were Hannah born in 1805, Thomas born in 1810 and John born in 1814. All the children were born in Llanbrynmair. William Bebb died on the 2nd of October 1852 in Venedocia, Van Wert, Ohio, USA.

Confusingly William's father was also named William so I shall refer to the man as William Sr. of the two. William Sr. was born on the 28th of March 1757 in Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire. On the 21st of June 1784 William Sr. married Lowry Breese  who was born on the 3rd of March 1762 in Tirymynach, Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire. William's sibling was Edward born in February 1793 in Llanbrynmair. Edward died on the 24th of February 1856 in Montgomery, Montgomeryshire. The are some discrepancies but I believe William Sr. also married an Ann Davies from Llanbrynmair and had 4 or 5 more
children together but I cannot be sure of the dates.

William Sr. father was yet another William Bebb! This William Bebb was born in 1724 in Rhiwgrisfol, Darowen, Montgomeryshire. He married Martha Hughes who was born in 1729 in Cwmearnedd/Cwm Carnedd Uchaf Tafolwern, Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire. William I believe was their only son. Martha's husband William died on the 13th of May 1817 in Rhiwgrisfol, Darowen, Montgomeryshire.

This is as far back as I've come with my Bebb ancestors. To get back as far as this I was grateful to discover Malcolm Bebb's webpages on our family his history as posted below:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bebbfamilyhistory/frames/bebbmain.htm

By viewing his pages I was also able to discover that  an American Herbert Bebb published a book on Bebb genealogy in 1944 in Chicago. Malcolm Bebb produced an excerpt from the book on this page:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bebbfamilyhistory/Herbert.htm

In my understanding of what both men have stated it seems nigh on impossible to go back any further. The parish church records are almost non existent and when it comes to deciphering the grave stones, the graveyard seems to be full of nothing but 'William' and 'Edward' Bebb's and no discernible dates to draw any more clues or conclusions.

Hopefully this may be of help to anyone also researching the Bebb family history.

Regards,

I was very interested to read your post on the Bebb family.  I have recently started researching my family tree and my maiden name was Bebb.  My great grandfather is also Richard Howell - my grandfather is Richard Llewellyn so thanks for the information.

I'm afraid that you've confused the William Bebb who married Mary  Evans on 19 Feb 1805 and was father of your Richard, with the William Bebb born 1787, who married Margaret Hughes in 1824 and, after her death, Margaret Owen, with whom he had several children and migrated to found Venedocia, dying there in 1856.  This is the family covered in Herbert Bebb's book, which is now online in full at Malcolm Bebb's site, and among whom I'm numbered.

The William who married Anne Davies is yet another William Bebb.  They married in Llanbrynmair on 14 May 1804 and migrated to Paddy's Run in Ohio in about 1815.  Their descendants provide the largest number of Bebbs today in the US.

Your William Bebb of Werngerynt, Llanbrynmair, who married Mary Evans, was not the son of William Bebb, Rhiwgriafol, who died in Venedocia (and who was my ancestor; his descendants are shown in the Bebb Genealogy reproduced on Malcolm Bebb's pages).  Yours was the son of another William who, I think, is the William Bebb, age 79 of Gwengerynt, recorded as buried in Llanbrynmair Parish churchyard on 17 Oct 1818.  Will Bebb, of Wern, was buried on 28 May 1841 in the churchyard, unfortunately just too early for the census, and I suspect that this was the husband of Mary Evans.

The only Bebbs in Wern in the 1841 census are Hannah 35 and John 25 (all ages are rounded off; these are siblings of Richard and Thomas, who'd moved to Tredegar) living with John 50 and Mary 20.  I suspect that John is a brother of Will and that they may be the two sons of William and Margaret who were baptised in Llanbrynmair, John on 12 Mar 1787 and William on 12 Feb 1789.  John m Margaret Roberts 23 Sep 1815 and their son Thomas of Werngerynt was baptised 13 Aug 1816 and buried 29 Aug 1828 age 12.  Margaret was buried 11 May 1829 age 41.

Richard's other siblings were successive sisters named Mary, one baptised 5 Apr 1813 and presumably died in infancy, the other baptised 27 Jul 1817, buried 7 Feb 1838.

There are other Bebb burials from Werngerynt that could provide leads to earlier generations:  Mary 19 Jan 1818 age 18, Benjamin 8 Jan 1824 age 75 (possibly s/o Richard and Ann of Dolgadfan, bap 23 Apr 1749), Martha 18 Jun 1830 age 81, as well as several infants.
