by My Daughter. Chatting to find her Roots !
|
There's not a lot of point in putting it all online if no one can find it.
... speaking of which, are we allowed to visit, and if so, where ?
(hint, hint: address in profile, in signature, in ... ?? )
1) Search programs are constantly combing the web (so-called "robots", so if you wait a while, your site will be found ...
2) I don't know what software you used for your web pages, so I don't know if this comes automatically, but in HTML you can define META-tags with keywords which you want search robots to find ... (which reminds me, I haven't done that for my site yet !)
3) there are web-services where you can register your site, so that robots and other searchers can find it. Not sure of the "how", maybe someone else knows. I often get such offers as SPAM-mail.
Yours in anticipation, Bob

Yes Sutton !
Please put your web address in the signature area along with your 'names', then at least we here on Rootschat can read it.
If I remember rightly, when I first posted my website to the Internet, it took about 2 months !!

Hi Sutton,
Enjoyed your site very much
Itsn't it strange how we share some surnames, ie. Williamson, Richards, Taylor & Woods, but as you know, they are not connected.

I looked at the Html for your home page and there is very little to identify the site or cause a search engine to find it. The title is <title>Ancestors of</title> Ancestors of Who?
This should read something like : <title>Ann Jones, Her Family Tree</title> That might make some sense for a search engine bot. I am afriad that I do not know how to manipulate the code for your site but someone like Berlin Bob or Falkryn may be better able to advise you. That is the problem and as it is you will never be found By contrast I give the source code for my own commercial site - perhaps it is the best as I am not a professional programmer but this is what I wrote: <html>
<head> <title>Southernprints: We supply Antique Engravings, Prints, Old Maps and much more. </title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252"> <meta name="KeyWords" content="family history, genealogical research, roots, antique prints, engravings, etchings, old map, American maps, European map, old British maps, world map, map old testament, old map England, map of old West, genealogy, antique etchings, vintage fashion plates, flapper fashion,French fashion, hunting prints, botanical drawings, topographical views, copperplate, satire, cartography, collecting, steel engravings, lithographs, rare maps, antique maps, aquatint, mezzotint, unusual gifts, engarvings, posterprint "> <meta name="description" content="We have old maps, antique engravings and prints, Victorian fashion prints, antique sporting prints and more. Collector material and valuable genealogical source." >

At the top of your index.html file you will find
<head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"> <meta name="GENERATOR" content="Created by Legacy 5.0, http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com"> <title>Ancestors of</title> </head>
If you replace
<title>Ancestors of</title> with
<title>Ancestors of your name</title> this will help a little. On your PC if you right click on the file and open with. . select notepad you should be able to edit the file.
If would also suggest adding some additional lines above the title one here are my lines from my file as an example, obviously you need to change to your sunames and modify the description as suits you the text in the content sections
<meta name="description" content="A collection of family stories and photographs, plus an extensive family tree containing many Dorset and Somerset people."> <meta name="keywords" content="Mullins, Bowditch, Crabb, Record, Taubman, Scadden, Family History, Geneology, Dorset, Somerset, uk, south west">
You may also want to add an introduction to your history on the front page. A little about your research etc to encourage people in. Think of the first page as the cover or opening of a book.

Hi sutton,
in my last post I wrote
3) there are web-services where you can register your site, so that robots and other searchers can find it. Not sure of the "how", maybe someone else knows. I often get such offers as SPAM-mail.
I've now just re-discovered Cyndy's Homepage Construction Kit at http://www.cyndislist.com/construc.htm where there is a section How to advertise your website: http://www.cyndislist.com/construc.htm#Advertise
see also my thread on this site: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,37357.0.html
Hope this helps, Good luck Bob
