Winforton House, District of Kington
« on: Tuesday 20 January 09 11:39 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone please help?  I am interested in Mrs Edward BURNEY and family who resided in Winforton House at least from 1911-1922.  I would like to know how long the family had association with Winforton - she was at Westwood West Malvern in 1901.

Is Winforton House still standing and if so, what is it used for today?

With thanks, Jill Statton, Adelaide, South Australia.

Hi Jill

Can you tell whether the property is in Winforton village?

If so, I wonder if it was known as Winforton Court, which is mentioned in Directories (see Genuki + Winforton) and is currently used as bed and breakfast accommodation?

http://www.winfortoncourt.co.uk/

http://www.britainsfinest.co.uk/bedandbreakfast/bedandbreakfast.cfm/searchazref/70001200WINA

If you can make the connection, the current occupiers should be able to tell you from their deeds when the property was sold by your family.

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Hi Arranroots,

I believe the property is in Winforton village but it is not Winforton Court.  I have read somewhere that Winforton House may have been called The Lodge at one stage, but I do need this clarified.  I have various references to the BURNEY family being at Winforton House:

1911 (Census) Mrs Amy A. BURNEY, Winforton House, Hereford
1913 (Directory) Mrs Edward BURNEY, Winforton House, Winforton
1919 (The Times) Mrs Edward M. BURNEY, Winforton House, Hereford
1922 (The Times) Mrs Edward M. BURNEY, Winforton House, Hereford.

It was a substantial house of 20 rooms in 1911, excluding skullery, bathrooms and water closets: any further description would be most welcome.

That's a puzzle!

I'm not all that familiar with the area, although I drive through from time to time.

Here's what Genuki says: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HEF/Winforton/Littlebury1876.html

No mention of a Winforton House there - but maybe it was built later?

Aha!  How about this though - it says that Winforton House was also known as Winforton Lodge, the lodge house to the Court ...

Ah, that's where I read it, so you see the House is not the Court.  But is it still standing?  Jill

It sounds as though it is, doesn't it?

Extra info says "extant"

http://www.parksandgardens.ac.uk/component/option,com_parksandgardens/task,site/id,5864/tab,summary/Itemid,292/

I had a look at the satellite imagery of the area and there is at least one building that might be it (L-shaped and not too far from what I take to be the Court).

I thought I'd leave you to Google but perhaps a local will be able to help too.  I don't recall seeing it while driving past, so possibly it is the one hidden in the trees.

As you say, Arranroots,

It does look a possibility and perhaps a local will respond.  I will also try to contact the local library to see whether they can confirm.

Thanks again, Jill

Thanks, Vic,

I would appreciate directions and especially a photo if you can manage.  Just like to know whether it is still privately owned and occupied.

Sorry about our WEBBs - no connection - is one of the most common surnames.  Jill

I also have WEBBs from North Nibley, Vic!

Have we discussed them before?  I'll send you a PM.

Thanks for that, Vic, but I'm not sure which building is supposed to be Winforton House - an L-shape building?  Perhaps the heat as got to me - it is presently 45 degrees Celsius in Adelaide - for the 3rd day in succession - with no end of Heatwave in sight.  Jill

yes it's the L shaped house - if  my memory serves me its looks like a victorian build  but may be a conversion of an original cottage.
If you're fed up with the heat could you ship a bit over here
i don't feel the cold normally but its seems to have been cold since beginning of december here with the odd nice day .
wind chill was terrible  today - i certainly don't envy you then heat. i dislike it - will get pictures as soon as i can for you.

Thanks Vic, and for your offer to take some of the heat overload, but I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy - it is murder here! and we have another week of it to go.....!  My poor computer is practically melting - my brain has already turned to mush.  We did have a reasonably comfortable night last night when the temp actually dipped below 30 - this is Celsius we are talking about!  Unfortunately, with Victoria and South Australia in heatwave together it puts a great strain on our power coming from Interstate, resulting in rolling power cuts too.  So anyone waiting for email replies from SA or VIC, please be patient - we do not all have a/c or indeed power!  Jill.

Just to let everyone know  dear brother in law convinced me the wrong house was winforton house - using google earth if you got to the main road  and branch of before you get to the winforton wood road   betwen the two B&W cottage up that drive  but before you reach the mass of small white buildings the  double l shaped house at the top of that drive is  winforton house. all used to be part of the same estate.
Dear Jill  have been thinking of you when watching the news hope you and everyone you know is safe .  Vic
