Thankyou Vic for your concern, me and mine survived the heatwave and are quite safe from the bushfires.  SA came off virtually unscathed and family in country VIC are unaffected - this time.  Loss of life there is 106 and rising.  Just dreadful, especially when you consider most fires are deliberately lit!  I'd like to put the perpetrators in a galvanised iron shed in the forest and let them take their chances!  Be back to Winforton House when I'm calmer.  Jill

Hi,

I know this is probably not useful for your personal research, but my husband's great grand father is living at Winforton House in 1897 (as on marriage certificate) and his grandmother's birth certificate in 1898 states the birth address as Winforton House. The family name was Taylor  (Herbert Ferguson Taylor & Doris Marion Mousely Taylor). I don't think they were living there for long as they are not in the 1891 census and I don't think that they were there in 1901 ( I can't remember off the top of my head)!

Herbert Taylor's profession is a farmer which is mysterious to us as we believed he was a seafaring man!

So I shall be interested to know if you find out anymore about the house.

Hi there PearsonJohnson,

The Taylor name means nothing to my research but you say he was normally a seaman?  They can't stay at sea indefinitely and when he was "home" he probably lent his hand to whatever occupation was available.  Besides he probably came from farming stock with a hankering for the sea.  It may also be that his wife was the one working for the "big house" and of course her husband would return home between voyages.  Hope this helps you understand better.

Still nothing further about Winforton House.  Jill

Hello, Jill,

Thanks very much for the information and your insight.

The name of Herbert's wife was Mary Ellen Pearson nee Cooke ( this was her second marriage to Herbert). The Cookes were a farming family but in Rochford near Tenbury.

I am hoping to take a drive out that way when I have some spare time and take some photos, so I will let you know when I do. Sorry I can't reciprocate with any info for you.

Cheers. Lorraine.

Hi Lorraine,

A photo of the house would be great - re-payment indeed!
Thanks, Jill
