farms of burtonwood - 1800s

Can anyone provide, or does anyone know of a link to find farms in the area of Burtonwood Warrington in the early 1800s. My ggg grandfather Samuel Appleton  was a farmer of Burtonwood, who raised several children their with his wife Ellen.

I'm taking it this is either pre-census or you have census entries that happily tell you he's a farmer, but don't give you the farm name (I had one of those). If not & there's any chance the family are there 1841 or after you could ask for a census look-up.

Otherwise you might find the Cheshire Tithe Maps site useful
http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/
The tithe maps were compiled in the late 1830s/early 1840s are the related data shows the landowners & tenants for the same date. You can search on the surname & and on the area. The site has side-by-side maps of different periods - very handy to see what the area is like now, for example.

You could also try trade directories - there are some for Cheshire online at
http://cheshiredirectories.manuscripteye.com/index.htm
and others at
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/
In both cases the earliest directories are of the 1820s.

Thanks for your time. Yes the info i hold on Samuels occupation is recorded on Lancashire Parish site for Burtonwood. Baptisms of his children have him stated as farmer for at least 2 of them. I shall check out the links you have sent but i am more likely to find file manufacturing, being occupation for his sons, thanks again.

Hi,

I am researching an Appleton family.

Samuel Appleton married Ellen Fitchett 1797.

I think these were the parents of Samuel Appleton bpt 1801 Burtonwood.

This Samuel married Elizabeth Holt 1823, and had 10 children, he was a file cutter.

Any connection ?

yes we are def researching the same family! which is fantastic news...Most of the Appleton men were filecutters, but it seems that around 1860s they had moved upto Manchester. They lived around the Ardwick/Chorlton/Hulme areas. If u send me your email, i can invite you to my family tree on ancestry, look forward to hearing from you.
