Correct marriage for William Tomkinson?
« on: Tuesday 20 January 09 17:34 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I have been trying to find the parents of Charlotte Tomkinson who married a James Ward.

Charlotte was born 1790 Adlington as was her sister Elizabeth 1792, to a William Tomkinson and Ann. The only marriage I could find that might fit on the pilot site is William Tomkinson to Ann Ward 2nd September 1788, Prestbury. When I looked at the image I'm sure it looked like Adlington but the page was slightly torn at the beginning. I understand not all parishes are covered, but would value your opinion as to whether I should go with this one?

Thank you Evie

Hello Evie
On the transcribed cheshire parish records for 1788 St. Peters Prestbury, it does say that William Tomkinson, husbandman m. Ann Ward 2nd September by licence and that both parties were from A.  On the Index A is Adlington.

Of course you cannot depend on transcribed records, but if the initial letter that you saw was A, then it would be Adlington as there is only one A for Adlington that St.Peters covered.

I hope this is helpful.

Kind regards

Hi Sue Smiley

Thank you for your reply. Yes the transcription information was helpful.  I think these two must be the parents of Charlotte and Elizabeth. I did a search to see if their names came up with other children but no luck, I was hoping that they may have included Ann's surname. A little suprised there was only two children although not unheard of I know.

I have copied the text to let you see for your opinion if you don't mind, thanks Su

Evie

Hello Evie
I personally would say that it was Adlington from the writing.
Sadly I can't help with the parentage of the children.

Kind regards

Hi Su

Thank you for taking the time to look and give your opinion.

I suppose sometimes when there are no other clues one has to go with gut instinct until proven otherwise Smiley When I'm unsure I tend not to go any further back in case I am following the wrong line. Maybe one day.......

Hello Evie
I know it is very frustrating when you don't have written proof who the parents are.
In my own case my grtx3 grandfather had two possible parents and I cannot prove which are the correct ones, so the line stopped with him.  I have traced the ones I had hoped were the correct ones back to 1629 just in case, but I cannot trace the other line back, so I have drawn a line under it.

Kind regards
