William FERGUSON
« on: Thursday 22 January 09 10:25 GMT (UK) »

I am trying to find any information about William Ferguson (my husband's paternal great grandfather) born around 1850 in Dundalk.
I believe he married Rose McCourt, had 7 daughters and 3 sons, all born in Dundalk. They left Dundalk for Liverpool in the 1890s. From the 1901 and 1911 censuses he was a Master Mariner with Dundalk & Newry Steam Packet Co.
I would love to find out more about his father, mother, grandparents etc.

thanks

a possible match from the familysearch Civil index for the marriage of William :

 Name: William Ferguson
 Reg dist: Dundalk
 type: Marriage
 date : 1871
 Volume: 12 / page: 717

I dont see a cross match for Rose McCourt - are you sure about her surname ?

If this looks correct you can order a cert from the GRO - www.groireland.ie
It would give you the bride and grooms fathers names which would give some more clues - but Williams birth and probably his parents marriage are before civil registration started here - 1864, non-Catholic marriage registrations start in 1845.

You could also try search the civil index for the birth of the children born in Dundalk - if you found a cert for one of these it would confirm William wife's details.

Civil index search : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1408347;p=2;t=searchable

Many thanks, I will certainly check out the marriage certificate.

The IGI listing for the children has the correct names, after those five came Kate, Josephine, Margaret, Winifred and Michael, between about 1882 and 1891.

thanks again

How did you do the search on IGI?, I have tried and cannot duplicate the results you got

What info did you put in the search boxes? I have tried with the parents names only but it does not allow a search without 'first name' and 'last name'

grateful for any help
kind regards

To do a parent search put in father's first and last name of main search page. Then put in mother's first and last names or just her first name (sometimes better to omit her last name if it's been transcribed wrong). Then click 'search.'
Note: IGI has some, not all, Irish births 1864-c1882 which is why all the later children in the family aren't listed.
