Searches on SP and the big "A" have failed to find Martha Mann and two children Patrick, b 1864 Portpatrick, and William James, b 1868 Stranraer. I would be very appreciative of someone with fresh eyes having a look for them.
Kind regards, M.

Hi M
You don't say what age Martha would be in 1871. Could Martha have been working away from the children and someone looking after them? There is this entry in 1871 for example:
Martha Mann, 24, general servant, b Ireland in the Quaker household at Gleniron (second) Farm House, New Luce Wigtownshire
Can't see the two young boys in 1871 though

There is a death showing for a Patrick Mann in 1868, aged 5, in Stranraer that might explain. Also a death for a 4 year old William James Mann in 1871, also in Stranraer

This may be Martha on the 1871 census working as a servant for the McQuaker family at Gleniron farmhouse New Luce Wigtownshire
Martha Mann 24 b Ireland
New Luce; ED: 4; Page: 3; Line: 19
I note from the IGI records that both boys appear to be illegitimate but neither are shown on the 1881 or 1891 censuses.
Did they survive infancy and if so - they may have been "adopted" by another family

No problem Carol - looks like we came to the same conclusion. Sad to see the likely deaths of the little ones.

Thank you!
Yes, that all makes sense. I had the IGI reference and separately a Martha b c1844 Ireland, but needed the census to make the connection.
I am embarrassed, my previous search of all Mann Wigtownshire 1855-1930 deaths hadn't show either name, or indeed Martha's unless she married, but that's tomorrow's mission!
Many thanks, M.
