Lightbody's Newtownards 1870's
« on: Saturday 24 January 09 08:01 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone have any information about the Lightbody families living in the Newtownards area during the 1870.

My Great Grand Father was born in 1876. His name is James Lightbody. Records that I discovered in South Africa indicates that he was born in Newtownards, Co. Down, Ireland on the 26 March 1876. I have searched the birth record entries for that time and only found a entry for a James Lightbody in 1874. This person died in Ireland and hence can't be my GGFather. My GGfather emigrated to South Africa around 1895 and died in 1945 in South Africa.

Any information will be much appreciated

In the Civil Registration Indexes 1845-1958
There is a birth record of a James Lightbody in the quarter Jan - Mar 1878 in the Registration district of Newtownards
Film number: 101055
Volume: 1
Page: 845
Digital GS number: 4193456
Image number: 00064

I'm wondering if the 1878 may have locked like 1876 in the papers you have.
Check out  : http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347

I know there are still Lightbody's in the area.
Good luck

from www.findmypast.com/passengerList , the first date is birth given and the second date when travelling
LIGHTBODY Jas  1875 M 1898 London South Africa Cape
then I looked again and found
LIGHTBODY A  1867 M 1897 Southampton South Africa Durban (Port Natal) VIEW  VIEW
LIGHTBODY A  1869 F 1897 Southampton South Africa Durban (Port Natal) VIEW  VIEW
LIGHTBODY Andrew  1869 M 1897 Southampton South Africa Durban (Port Natal) VIEW  VIEW
LIGHTBODY J  1870 M 1896 Southampton South Africa Cape VIEW  VIEW
LIGHTBODY J  Unknown M 1897 Southampton South Africa Cape VIEW  VIEW

I tried http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/L/LiLl.htm#lig with several Lightbodys of Newtownards area

then I came across something that if it was to include your James would be great, it is a Lightbody family tree in volume 11 which is in the Blackwood Family history manuscript trees in the LinenHall library, Belfast.  I suggest you ask them for photocopying estimates if they think your knowledge relevant and you should be prepared to pay a fee for copying, post and packing, and perhaps some staff time and overheads. However if the material is really relevant when you get it, I suggest a further donation to this unique library that is always needing extra funds Linen Hall Library,17 Donegall Square North, Belfast BT15GB, Northern Ireland, Telephone: +44 (0)28 9032 1707,  Fax: +44 (0)28 9043 8586, Email: <irish.reference[at]linenhall.com>.replace the [AT] with the symbol please

Hi LL, Otto and Archie. LL isnt interested in his answers, so I am not searching further. But you Archie I spot on another messageboard asking where somebody lives etc.  Why not put your family quest on its own heading yourself and we could answer you there. I already notice that www.emeraldancestor.com have loads of William John Moore but the most recent is 1880. However one could be connected an uncle cousin etc. I havent looked for a Jane Lightbody yet, but am tempted, Jim

At the infant university, Porters were sort of servants, being Messengers and everything else as well.  Nowdays they are important staff. That first Samuel entry is out of alphabetical order and looks like a late addition to the printing or because they have just been appointed, or married with new address etc

On the new http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch there are some 53 Jane Lightfoot entries and some 3700 William John Moore. this is too many for me to tackle , I hope its new for you archie. Good luck and dont forget the existing family tree in the Linenhall Library I mentioned in my first answer, above to LL
