I would say that name most name variations were due to the person registering the event - (registrar or priest) interpretation of the names.
Many people could not write so they would not be in a position to correct this..
I have found name variations in my ancestors even when I know from previos events that the person could read and write, and other later events where they marked registers rather than signed - no idea why..

The Irish alphabet has no 'z' or 'y' so Swanzy/Swancey are likely variations as Shane said.

what sort of timeframe is involved ?
if it was possible to match up someone in a trade directory, keeping a trade or official position but have the alternate name in later editons - then it could confirm they used a different name.
In Slaters of 1846 there are quite a few Swan and Swanzy entries including a Samuel Swanzey Attorney & Crown clerk, Cavan town. I would certainly say its probale that the names are probably related and could have been shortened at some stage.

I was thinking the same, Swans were Legal people, JP's, Doctors too....so many similarities.
Will just take them as all the one. Nobody actually seems to know! The Swan/ns and Swanzys also married Moores, Dudgeons etc, all in Legal Profession too.
I have about 100 records for them but there doesn't seem to be a point where I can see one of them dropping the zy...Maybe back further in time!
Of course, the more one looks at something the harder it is to spot what they are looking for! I'm probably looking at it but can't see it!
They are very hard to follow as they moved around a lot....Monaghan, New York, Antrim, Meath. Dublin, Rhodesia, S Africa.....and places in between...

Well, you'll probably never have a definitive answer.
Unless you can find someone who definitely used one name in some years, and can be linked to something where it changed to the other name in other years. Looks like these people weren't illiterate, so that won't be the reason.

The Irish language has only eighteen letters a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u but occasionally six others are borrowed from other languages ... j, q, v, w, x and z
