Hi there, Was wondering if anyone would be able to locate two places in South Leith to see if the streets or places are still, there where family lived 1841 and 1851. 1841 the Gartland family were living at Kirkgate South Leith 1851 their address was 7 Brickwork Close South Leith. Any help much appreciated. Sue

Hi Sue , the Kirkgate in Leith was almost completely rebuilt a number of years ago leaving only a couple of historic buildings . There is no mention of Brickworks Close on any current maps of the area . Look at www.leithhistory.co.uk . There is a lot of interesting stuff there as well as many photos of old Leith including the Kirkgate . Mike

Brickwork Close is shown in 1709 and is now represented by that part of the remodelled Giles Street which is nearest to Trinity House. Also known as Tilework Close and was named after the brick and tile works set up on waste ground by Gilbert and Alexander Mathison in 1725. (From "The Place Names of Edinburgh by Stuart Harris ISBN 1-904246-06-0) A little bit of information is also available at http://www.edinburgh.org.uk/ on Edinburgh Street Names.
Kirkgate figures in the Siege of Leith 1560 as as already indicated was reduced by redevelopment in the 1960s to a residential cul-de-sac.

Hi Sue,
Think Luckydog is correct, I can remember the Kirkgate Shopping Centre being built possibly in the 60's and 70's. On the Edinburgh History website, http://www.rootschat.com/links/05d5/ see story from Bob Cowe, who was a milkman for Leith Provident delivered milk to Brickwork Close in 1955.

Hi Sue,
From Ancestry, your rellies, In 1841 census, Kirkgate, Leith Peter Garland 60 b 1781 Ireland Lamp Lighter Ann Gartland 50 b 1791 Scotland wife James Garland 11 b 1830 Midlothian Helen Garland 8 b 1833 Midlothian Elizabeth Garland 2 b 1839 Midlothian
Suspect Peter died between census.
In 1851 census at 7 Brickwork Close, Leith:- Ann Gartland 58 b 1793 Clackmannan Householder Betsey Garland 30 b 1821 South Leith Daughter - House Servant Elizabeth Garland 19 b 1832 South Leith Daughter Scholar Alexa Garland 17 b 1834 South Leith Daughter - House Servant James Garland 21 b 1830 South Leith Son - Coppersmith Journeyman Peter Garland 3 b 1848 South Leith Great Grandchild
Not too sure that relationships are correct Peter is supposed to be son of James.
In 1861, at South Leith Poorhouse, A Gartland 68 b 1793 Clackmannan No Occupation
In 1871, at South Leith Poorhouse, Ann Gartland 78 b 1793 Clackmannan Pauper formerly Housewife
Ann does not appear in later census, suspect she has died
