Seeking McCarthys - Leitrim place name - can you make this out please?
« on: Sunday 25 January 09 23:51 GMT (UK) »

Hello,

My ancestor Thomas McCarthy was born in Ireland around 1855. He settled in Lancashire England and married here in 1879. Until the 1911 census came online I had no idea where exactly in Ireland he came from. I know that his father was called Charles McCarthy as was stated on his marriage certificate, but this has been insufficient to trace anything more of him.

Unfortunately I am not able to make out the place name that is written above 'Leatrim' on the census.

If anyone is familiar with the localities and towns in Leitrim could you provide me with your valued suggestions please?

Thanks very much indeed.

I see that as being Dromaprie ?

unfortunately placenames beginning with Drom/Drum are very common in Co. Leitrim - over 200 results..

dont see an exact match but a few places that could sound like -
Drumoghty, Drumkeeran, Drumadykey , Drumkeelan

see SeanRuad's townland database at : http://www.seanruad.com

Looks a bit like Drumahrie is written but since Leitrim is written as Leatrim this place is probably wrong as well. There is a townland called Drumahaire but can't say it the same place.

It's interesting that you make out the 'Drum' part of the name as I just couldn't see it myself. Drumahrie is an excellent suggestion. It's a start certainly.

A townland? Oh my! I realise I have a lot to learn here!

Thanks very much indeed for your help. It was much appreciated.

To understand what townlands are and why they are so important:

Griffith’s Valuation is available to search here (under family name or place name) and scanned images of the actual page from printed book are linked to the search results. Some places also have a link to the valuation maps.

99% sure it is Dromahair...about 10 mile east of Sligo, just beside Lough Gill.
