Hi
I'm actually a member of this Church, and I know they've got a few old pictures, but they haven't been put on the internet (yet).
If you're still after them, I could scan and send them to you?
Or are you after new pictures, in which case I could take a couple myself.
Many thanks Dan

Hi Dave
At the moment, I can only find internal shots, so I've attached the best of these. Other people in the Church think it was taken around WW2, which might explain the USA flag.
It doesn't look a lot different today, except for the new stained glass window above the altar, which was put in a few years ago, I believe. If you have any specific questions, I can ask some of the people who have attended for about 70 years.
I hope soon to have some external pictures as well in the next week or so, but we're not sure which cupboard they've been put.
Many thanks Dan

Hi Dave
Found them! I've attached 2, although I have more.
A very brief history - it was built in 1902, and looked like the first picture (with the big roof). At the end of WWI, the roof was removed as it was causing the Church to subside. The vicarage was built some time in the 1920s, and is still used by the current Vicar (Father Tim Codling). In the 1960s, a Church hall was added (as per the second picture), by the then Vicar (Father Tony Hickey).
Apparently, the altar was originally at the other end of the Church, with a triptych painting donated by P&O (then connected with the Docks) after two of their sailors drowned. The altar was later moved to the other end (though I don't know when), and the painting moved to the Lady's chapel. In 2002, a new stained glass window was put in.
In addition, there was a second Church on the other side of Tilbury (All Saints). As part of a housing development in the 1960s, that Church was demolished and replaced by a house which still belongs to the Church.
Hope that's of some help - if you want more info, I'm currently doing some research, and I have a few news clippings I could share with you as well.
Many thanks Dan

Hi Dave. Loved your photos of St Johns church, I was born in Tilbury and lived at No 3 Ottawa road just behind the vicarage, lots of my family and relatives were married in the church but I never saw it looking like any of your photos. I have a photo on flickr, (the only one I have of it) taken the 9th or 10th of December 1964 of the church, taken a couple days before I went to Australia. I see that you have a flickr account, and that you are a member of the Thurrock group, your photos are very nostalgic for me, I would love to see All of your Tilbury photos in the Thurrock group, Thank You Very Much. Sincerely Sydney
