Richard Lee in Wansford
« on: Tuesday 27 January 09 09:33 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to trace Richard Lee who married Ann Cowham in 1820 at Thornaugh, Northamptonshire. (IGI)

I have an Ann Lee in the Northamptonshire Census 1841, as a charwoman, born in Northamptonshire in about 1786 and living alone.

I also have an Ann Lee in the 1851 Northamptonshire Census as a widowed pensioner born about 1786, living with children Fanny (28) and Richard (23). She is listed as born in Hull, Yorkshire.

I have another Ann Cowham (nee Cade) born in Hull, Yorkshire of the same age, married to Thomas Cowham in Hull, in 1806. In the 1841 Census for Yorkshire, she too has a daughter Fanny (28) and a son, Edward (23).

Perhaps there were 2 Ann Cowhams both from Hull, both born in the same year and both with a daughter Fanny born around the same time? Maybe they were cousins, with one staying in Hull and one moving to Northamptonshire.

Richard Lee doesn't seem to appear in any of the Censuses. I have some details of Richard Lee from another tree, but I suspect these are perhaps wrong:

Richard Lee (1762) married Ann Cowham (1786) in 1820.

Children:
Frances 1921
Charles 1821
Sarah 1823
Mary 1825
Richard 1826-1912

This would have made Richard 64, and Ann 40 when they had Richard - possible I guess??

The marriage that you found on the IGI appears in the Northants. Marriage Index as follows:

28 OCT 1820 - Wansford C of E - Richard LEE otp widower / Ann CAWHAM otp spinster

So it would seem that this Ann had not been married before, so is unlikely to be the former Ann CADE.   If Richard was a widower when he married, then it would be quite possible that he was 20 years or so older than his spouse.

Thanks Pennie

I'm now looking for Richard's 1st wife.

I have a Richard Lee marrying Ann Corry on 21 October 1790 in Kilsby, Northants as a possibility.
