St Giles
« on: Tuesday 27 January 09 21:47 UTC (UK) »

I'm doing some research for a friend in an area I'm not familiar with so can anyone please tell me if the St Giles in the Fields, Middlesex (1851 census) is the same place as St Giles, Camberwell, London.

Thanks,
Jennie

Hi Jennie,

Camberwell is south of the Thames and Middlesex is mainly  to the north/west.

As Nanny Jan says, they're completely separate.

Here's a link to the parish website for St Giles, Camberwell:

http://www.stgilescamberwell.org.uk/

The Middlesex one is St Giles-in-the-Fields - see:

Hiya

If you need anything from the St Giles In The Fields parish registers then let me know as I'm often working on them when I'm up at LMA.

Hi Julie

Thanks for the kind offer.  What I am looking for is baptism of John Smith Relf b abt 1826 St Giles, Middlesex, to find his parents.  The only one I can find on the IGI is just a John Relf 1826 St Giles, Camberwell, and after getting replies to my original question I now know that cannot be the correct one.  His d reg in 1900 age 73 would confirm this birthdate.

Also, if anyone can find his marriage to Lydia (unknown) b abt 1816 Hartley Row, Hampshire, I would be grateful.  I cannot find it using any variation of spelling on Freebmd.

Hi

St Giles in the Fields registers remain with the church and are not indexed. There is a microfilmed copy of the registers held at the London Metropolitan Archives. The registers will not be part of the digitalisation process with Ancestry as this only includes deposited registers.

Marriage 9th December 1849 St Luke, Old Street
John Relf Full Age Bachelor Butcher 4 ?
Lydia Kent Full Age Spinster City
the section of the register with fathers' details is to damaged to read - you really need a copy of the marriage certificate to see it.
Marriage by banns
both signed
witnesses FJM Carthy and Mary to faded to read

As John was much younger than Lydia she may have been adjusting her age

27th December 1812 Hartley Wintney Hampshire
Lydia Kent parents James and Elizabeth

The St Luke marriage register is badly damaged. The marriage should have registered in the St Luke's registration district. St Luke registration district registers are probably now held by Islington registry office.

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/st%20luke.html

You would have to contact them to see if they hold the marriage explaining it is not found in the GRO index but it is in the badly damaged St Luke Old Street marriage register but the full details cannot be seen, or obtain the copy marriage certificate held by the GRO.

Regards

Valda
