SOUTH AFRICA: James Lovett
« on: Friday 11 February 05 09:39 GMT (UK) »

Thanks to rootschat I have located my GGG Grandfather James LOVETT.  According to the 1871/1891 Census he was born in Wyneburg, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa abt 1814.  He is listed as a British Subject and a cordwainer.  He married Elizabeth born Kilkenny Ireland abt 1813.  In the census he and Elizabeth live in Windsor.  How can I find out how and when he arrived on these shores?  Any help would be great.

Hello lainey,

It looks as though you may be out of luck ... immigrants did not have to register with
the authorities in Britain until 1914. If they'd been immigrating to a European country
they would have had to register. Source: Tracing Your Roots - Immigration.

I've linked this thread to Lovett on the Kilkenny board.

For a case like this you have to consider if he was likely from a family who moved to SA and then came back, or if the family were only temporarily passing through the area (i.e. military family).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wynberg,_Cape_Town - there was a British garrison in the area, so its possible he was of a miitary family.

In 1861 he was in Heston, Middlesex - he is listed as married, although his wife is not with him, b. Wynberg, SA, a boot maker. With him are son, James C (20), and daughter Bridget (11). In 1841 he is in Westminster - 25, b. Foreign, boot maker, wife Nancy 20, b. Ireland, children John, 3, and James, 1, b. London.

I would recommend that you purchase the birth certificate of one of the children, and then look for the marriage once you have the maiden name of Elizabeth. As the son James appears to be James Coakley Lovett (he is in the same area as his father in 1871), she may be Elizabeth/Nancy 'Coakley'.
