Mullingar - birth/marriage/military !!
« on: Wednesday 28 January 09 11:16 UTC (UK) »

Hi All

Wondered if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction as I'm struggling a bit  Grin
My gg grandfather Samuel Campbell was born in Scotland c1809 and served first in the 74th regiment of foot and then the 91st.  He married Margaret Tarras and they had 5 children, Elizabeth, their eldest child and my g grandmother was born in Ireland in c1840.  On another one of their childrens birth certificate it states 'parents married 1840 Mullingar County Westmeath'
Firstly, how would I go about trying to find a marriage certificate for Samuel and Margaret, also a birth certificate for Elizabeth.
Secondly, is it possible that Samuel was based in Mullingar with his regiment?  Margaret Tarras was born c1820 in Aberdeen so not sure why they married in Ireland

I know it a bit of a long shot but any ideas or opinions welcome  Grin Thanks in advance

Hi,

I visited Mullingar three years ago, the barrack buildings are still there. I understand that it was quite a large, and important, garrison town. The buildings would seem to reflect that.

I have my gggrandfather's army records, which show he was stationed there in the 1880's with the 2nd Battalion, the South Yorkshire Regiment.
I hope that this helps.

Hi Cy

Thansk for the reply and the info.  I already his service records but the writing is quite bad and it doesn't appear ro say where he was stationed only that for 3 years he served on St Helena.  I think its quite likely that he was stationed there for a short while before returning to Scotland.
Thanks for the info about the Barracks
