Just out of interest have you had a look for the family in 1911 Census.

I had a good look today and could not find them in Irish Census.

Any ideas where the Veresmith's were at the time possibly in UK?

Perhaps finding them on this might answer alot of questions.

Hi Keith and All  Smiley

Always check out submitted entries on the IGI……  Wink

FreeBMD has:

Jun Qtr 1891; Watford; Vol 3a; Page 620
Evelyn Henry Wehrschmidt

Mar Qtr 1893; Watford Vol 3a; Page 596
Noel Loui (sic) Wehrschmidt

Jun Qtr 1894; Watford; Vol 3a; Page 583
Daniel James C Wehrschmidt

Jun Qtr 1896 Watford; Vol 3a Page 623
Marie Louise C Wehrshmidt (indexed without the “c”)

Sep Qtr 1899; Watford; Vol 3a; Page 694
Henrietta E M Wehrschmidt

Jun Qtr 1902; Lewisham; Vol 1d; Page 1141
William J Wehrschmidt

1901 Census has:
Parish: Edinburgh St Luke; ED: 115; Page: 5; Line: 6;
62 Hanover Street, Edinburgh, Midlothian
Daniel N Wehrschmidt
Age: 39
Born: Sub), United States (New Brit (sic)
Relationship: Lodger
Occupation: Artist
No sign of wife and children, but according to the 1911 Marie Louise senior was born in Scotland - perhaps he was on a painting trip, and they were staying with her family.

Added: modified as I can't post this info here  Wink, but it led to the conclusion that:

So "Moira" was probably “Henrietta Moira”  Grin

There is a marriage for a Henrietta E M Veresmith, but much later:
Sep Qtr 1938 Chard, Somerset; Vol 5c; Page 831; Spouse: Harold C RAY

There is a death for a Daniel A Veresmith, aged 70, Mar Qtr 1932, Taunton Vol 5c; Page 431; and there are telephone directory entries for a Mrs M L I Veresmith in Upper Farringdon, Hants until at least 1938.  In 1936, at the age of 69 and recorded as an artist, she returned to England from Lisbon, so she was still getting around!!

Unfortunately this doesn't tell us who Ewart was, but does fill some gaps.

Kind regards
Gaie

Hi again, Gaie!
You're a real star, always pointing me in the right direction.  I think you've just about tidied everything up for me in one fell swoop.  Must add a little postscript to the U3A tutor now...

Just a little post script

Daniel James Christopher, missing from 1911 Census in Gaie's post above, left Edinburgh Academy and joined Lothian & Border Yeomanry as a trooper in 1911 according to De Ruvigney's Roll of Honour.  This last source also has an entry for Evelyn Henry

Lee, Kent (now Lee,London SE12) is just a mile or so from Mottingham where the two brothers are commemorated on the War Memorial

Pat,
Thanks so much for this extra information.  In every sense of the expression, I feel that The Last Post has been added/blown in this thread, which has turned up some truly fascinating detail.  And all from a small handwritten diary, found in a secondhand bookshop, detailing events in a family life in Ireland in 1921...
