My 3x grandmother. She emigrated to Australia in 1839 on the JAMES MORAN in the care of Isabella McKenzie. Her age is listed as 10 in 1839. Both came from Gairloch, R&C as did many others on the same ship.

There were many Morrisons and Mckenzies in Gairloch at the time and also on the James Moran.

Are there any records of early 1800s for Gairloch?

Why did so many people leave at the same time?

Hi Gibson

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

There is a possible submitted entry showing on IGI at www.familysearch.org:

Mordina MORRISON  Birth: 1829 Gairloch, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
Parents:   DONALD McKENZIE    ISABELLA MORRISON

Now, the way this has been written up (source of data not shown in this submitted entry), it would normally mean that parents were not married given the surname showing for Murdina. I wonder if the Isabella McKenzie you have on the ship manifest could be her mother?

Also on IGI at familysearch is a possible banns/marriage for Donald McKenzie and Isabella Morrison on 02 MAY 1834 Gairloch, Ross And Cromarty. this is an actual extract from the Old Parish Register and is available to view as an image on Scotlands People, the official pay to view site for original images of OPRs and BMDs.

A few other children show to this couple on IGI - maybe you can try and see whether they show on the ship's manifest you have for the 'James Moran':

HECTOR MCKENZIE   Birth: DEC 1834 Gairloch, Ross And Cromarty
JOHN MC KENZIE  Christening: 20 NOV 1836 Gairloch, Ross And Cromarty

Thanks for the reply.  Isabella McKenzie on the James Moran is listed as 26, unmarried.  Murdina, 10 is listed as "under the protection of Isabella McKenzie". Another Isabella is listed as "wife of Talbert " I'll post some more information later today.
