St Peters College Peterborough
« on: Thursday 29 January 09 19:09 GMT (UK) »

Whilst searching the 1881 census for relations I came across one of the Wyatt line at St Peters College, a fairly comprehensive INTERNET search drew a blank on any information on it. Unless it has changed it's name then nothing appears in modern day Peterborough. It has a fairly extensive list of boarders in 1881 all of whom are male and appear in the 18-25 age bracket and from a wide range of birth places including at least on from overseas. I get a feeling it may have been a divinity college but that is only a hunch. I would appreciate any local knowledge on this college (no pun intended)

I believe it was a teacher's training college.
The building is still there, now converted to offices, known as Peterscourt in City Road, Peterborough see http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=519532&Y=298865&A=Y&Z=110

Just discovered in an old book about Peterborough:

It was completed in 1859, and was built by the Diocese of Peterborough as a teacher training college. Used as a male teacher-training college until 1914 when it closed. It re-opened in 1921 as a women's teacher training college, and closed in the mid-1930's.

Yes, very much so, sorry I have not responded before but have been following another line of enquiry that has just come to hand on another branch of the same line, as well as entertaining my 4 grand daughters.  Both seem to have taken up more time than I would have liked

This site which contains some old pictures of peterborough may be of interest to you. Peterscourt as a keyword will give you the building you want. Its chimneys are truly memorable.
