Charles Skene Slora and Susan Fraser (and Elizabeth Slora)-Aberdeen - COMPLETE
« on: Thursday 29 January 09 21:22 UTC (UK) »

Charles Skene Slora ans Susan Fraser were married in Aberdeen on 17 Apr 1867.  On the 1871 census they, together with their daughter Jane (my ggm) were at Spa Street in St Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen.

Interestingly (as far as I am concerned), also resident at Spa Street was a 63 year old shop keeper from Duffus; Elizabeth Slora.  Staying with her were her daughter and grandchildren.

Can anyone help determine whether or not Charles and Elizabeth were related?

Stuart

Hi Stuart

There are more Sloras lurking about Spa Street  Roll Eyes:

William A Stora 32, Jobbing Gardner, Forres, Morayshire
Eliza N Stora 29, b. St Nicholas, Aberdeen
John Stora 9
William Stora 5
Elizabeth Stora 4
Jane Stora 3 Months

Address: 24 Spa St

Some of their children's births from IGI in case you recognise any of the middle names. All birth showing as St Nicholas except for John:

1. JOHN NICOLL SLORA Birth: 18 MAY 1861 Old Machar
2. ROBERT SLORA  Birth: 29 MAY 1863
3. WILLIAM EDWARD SLORA  Birth: 11 MAY 1865
4. ELIZABETH ADDISON SLORA Birth: 04 MAR 1867
5. SLORA Female Birth: 06 DEC 1869
6. SAMUEL SLORA  Birth: 12 JAN 1869
7. JANE MC KAY SLORABirth: 23 DEC 1870

Have you viewed that 1867 MC for Jane's parents to try and confirm their names?

Monica,

Thanks very much - I knew that I could rely on you!

My mistake re Mary/Jane.  Mary is Jane's older sister.

I have yet to look at the MC for Charles and Susan; I got the wedding date
information from Jane's BC.

I'll see if I can find any details regarding Charles/William.

Some of the children's entries showing on IGI to John and mother Elizabeth MURRAY:

1. JAMES SLORACH Birth: 09 MAR 1834/ Christening: 30 MAR 1834 Forres, Moray
2. WILLIAM SLORACH Birth: 11 MAR 1839/ Christening: 24 MAY 1839 Forres, Moray
3. MARY ANN SLORACH Birth: 02 MAY 1836/ Christening: 22 MAY 1836 Forres, Moray

The only possible banns/marriage showing on IGI (maybe other entries on SP):

JOHN SLORACH and ELIZA MURRAY Marriage: 07 JUN 1828 Golspie, Sutherland, Scotland

Not sure if the right entry because of the county but one to keep in mind.

Mmm. Given eldest son in 1851 shows as born in Caithness c. 1830 maybe that 1828 marriage entry could well be theirs?

I couldn't find a MC for Charles and Susan.

I've tried Slora/Stora and widened the dates; I'll keep going.

I'll also look at your suggestions, Monica.

I think I know why you are not finding the marriage in 1867. You have Susan's maiden name as Fraser however IGI and SP have it as GAMMACK (a new surname to me!).

Monica,

Some of the 1851 census details that you have posted seem to tie in with the 1871 census.

Eliza Flora, 42, Merchant, Duffus - Elizabeth Slora, 63, Shop Keeper, Duffus
Charles S Flora, 1,-, Old Machar - Charles Slora, 23, Cork Cutter, Old Machar

I think that there is an age discrepancy regarding Jessie.  In 1851, she is 13 and from Forres and in 1871 she is 23 and a seamstress from Aberdeen - I think that there may be another Jessie.

Incidentally, I work about 3 miles from Forres!

When you get discrepancies, it makes sense to look perhaps at the original. Also FreeCen in good on the 1851 for Aberdeenshire, you might want to also have a look at that.

Monica,

Looking at your last post, Fraser/Gammack makes sense.  Perhaps Mr Fraser and Ms Gammack were yet to get married when Susan was born.  Not the first time that this has happened.

Thanks for your help tonight.  I'll be back again in tomorrow.

No, not on the death cert. for parents' details but that is how she married it would seem. If you look at the tree that I posted above (there is also one on Ancestry World Tree that I am trying to access now) it looks like Susan may have been illegitimate (mother Gammack and father Fraser).

Sorry Stuart, posts crossed over.
