Broomfield
« on: Sunday 01 February 09 14:29 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to track down a family who I believe to be in Clonenagh civil parish, Queens Co, circa 1880-1900.  In 1879, Ellen Sawyer married George Broomfield.  Ellen was the daughter of Temperance Powell and Francis Sawyer.  The marriage came in her home parish of Offerlane, but no trace of them after the marriage was found.  Thanks to the new Family Search Pilot, I've now found some evidence that they were in Queens Co.

I will be in Ireland in 2 weeks and would like to check the Clonenagh Church of Ireland registers.  Would anyone know if these are amongst the holdings of the Rep. Church Body Library or will I need to check elsewhere?

Additionally, if the names here ring any bells, please let me know.  I can trace Ellen Sawyers ancestry back to the mid 1700s, and would be glad to share my research.

from Slaters Commercial Directory of  1894 - under section headed : "CLONENAGH and CLONAGHEEN parish in Queen's county..."

George T. Broomfield, Mountrath - farmer

I can have a look back in older directories if this sounds of interest...

Thanks Shane, but until I find a bit more out about the family, I can't tell if this would be my George or not.  I think the only way I will know for sure is to find some kids for the couple or find them in a census return.  Kind of hard to do the latter when you don't know for sure where they are living!

You might need to rethink Co. Laois.
According extracted birth record in IGI, George Bloomfield and Ellen Sawyer had a son Joseph born 24 Dec.1879 Sparrowsland..., Co. Wexford.
If you go to LDS Pilot site and look for the birth it should give you the exact registration district.

Good Lord, Gertie, how the heck did I miss that one!  Maybe I need to get some sleep rather than sitting in front of that Pilot Search site.  I think I've logged 80 hours on it since it went up a week ago--and I have a full time job!  Thank you a million times over, Aghadowey, you've saved me a world of time!

Well, I found the record in the Pilot Search site, but cannot find it in the IGI.  I've looked for Joseph, I've looked via the parents names, and I've looked just by surname.  Can you give me a link to the IGI entry, so I can see it?

Thanks.  I see the problem.  They have it recorded as Bloomfield.  In the Offerlane parish records, George's surname is recorded as Broomfield.  I think I've now found the family on a passenger record coming to the US, as well as with additional children....we shall see if this turns out to be my lot.

found a possible connection on a list of names who signed a "Declaration against Repeal of the Union, 1830"

Broomfield Bazil, Trey, near Maryboro' , Queen's Co.

I wonder if Trey and Irey (mentioned in an earlier post) are the same place - could be a mistranscription somewhere along the line.

I would say that's correct, Irey is in Ballyfin.

Also at the moment, living in Portlaoise is one, Basil Broomfield, farmer, and he lives with Clonreher Castle on his land.
