Logie - Which county?
« on: Saturday 31 January 09 12:27 UTC (UK) »

My relatives were married at Logie, Perthshire in 1777 - William Hogg and Margaret Anderson.  Their first child John was baptised one year later in the parish of Larbert, Stirlingshire - as were his two younger brothers.

The basic question is, please, how far is Logie, Perthshire from Larbert, Stirlingshire?
I think  Cheesy this is to do with some parishes at some time belonging to one county but in fact being within the boundaries of another.  (This per Genuki).

If I am right  Smiley  then Logie parish is just to the north of Stirling and Larbert is about 12 miles away to the south.

But is there not a Logie in Fife?

Regards

There is a Logie in Stirlingshire, near Stirling University which is, as you say, about 12 miles from Larbert (maybe a bit more).

Logie in Perthshire is about 60 miles from Larbert.
This Logie is about 5 miles West of Blairgowrie if you are looking for it on a map.

As for Logie in Fife, see this -  http://www.ukvillages.co.uk/village/Logie-Fife

I've just been reading the 2 Genuki articles about Logie.
From what it says, the Logie, now in Stirlingshire, could very well have been classed as Perthshire before the boundary changes.

Given the distances involved, I think it likely your family lived there, rather than the Logie near Blairgowrie.

For an exellent explanation of Logie 'Parish', have a look at this site:

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=4168&mforum=warmemscot

The thread originated over the confusion of locations for war memorials within villages etc. The post from ADP explains what happened with the boundaries and gives dates/reasons when and why the changes took place.

That's great Anne.
So it does look as though Reiver's folk lived in Logie near Blairgowrie.

 Undecided Don't know!

Maybe if Reiver comes back with a wee drop more info - we'll find out.

I think Larbert and Logie (the 'Stirling' one) are about 10 miles apart so no big deal really for them to pop back and forward.

Thank you both for helping.  I've been listening  Smiley

The marriage I originally referred to took place in 1777 - in the parish of Logie, Perthshire (from ScotlandsPeople).

In looking at Genuki - for Stirlingshire - there is an extract from an 1887 Gazeteer which starts '"STIRLINGSHIRE, west-midland county of Scotland; consists of a main portion and two detached sections to the NE. included in Perthshire and Clackmannanshire.  On-line there is a map of Stirlingshire "John Thomson's Atlas of Scotland 1832".  This shows Logie which is just to north of Stirling (town) - with Stirling in Stirlingshire and Logie in Perthshire. The county boundaries are coloured.

I've been trying to find out more about the Logie near Blairgowrie?  I cannot find that this Logie is - was? - a parish.

I'm still of a mind to think that my two relatives were married Logie, Perthshire - just to the north of Stirling.

Hi Reiver,

I took the liberty of downloading the page from SP containing William & Margaret's Proclamation of Banns & Marriage.

I think it's pretty certain that it's definately the Logie at Stirling.

If you have a look at all the other entries, the people all appear to come from neighbouring villages to the Logie at Stirling - Dunblane, Dollar, Alloa, Stirling, Crieff and Stirling itself.

I had a look in the pre-1855 MI Book for East Stirlingshire (which covers this Logie) but there were no Hogg stones in either the Churchyard or the Old Churchyard which is up the hill from Logie Kirk. Plenty of Andersons but without knowing which family Margaret came from . . . . . . ?

In Larbert Old Parish Churchyard there is a stone erected by a John Hogg to his wife Margaret McKinlay who died in 1859 aged 35 (making her date of birth c1824) but I would think unless she was a lot younger than her husband, this John is too recent to be John son of William & Margaret Hogg.

Again, there are lots of Hogg stones in Larbert but without knowing any details . . . . . . ?

Just as a matter of interest Anne, were any of the other villages mentioned ever recorded as Perthshire?

As you know, I'm looking at my family in Stirlingshire and wonder if I should extend my searches to Perths.

You're right, Anne...this John's parent's were Peter Hogg and Janet Yorkston (this is one of the photos you sent me.  Smiley

Don't know who William would be but I'll keep an eye out.

That'll teach me to try and match any up then!!

Still, with a but of luck there might be a connection to some of the other ones somewhere down the line - never say never - eh?
