I am looking for more information on my gr.gr.grandparents.  Patrick Flynn was a tailor or a sailor and married Mary Power.  They were married in Dunhill 23.02.1830 Their children were Edmund 1848, Thomas 1833, john 1835, Julia 1838 and Patrick and Mary.   Edmund married Bridget Power born 1853, they married in 1873.   My other gr gr granparents Bridgets parents, were John Power and Margaret Kean either of Kill or Dunhill.  they also had a daughter Mary.

Welcome to Rootschat. Have moved your post out of Irish Resources (for posting information helpful to others) to Ireland-General board for now. If you could perhaps tell us the county in Ireland I can move this thread to the proper place where others that can help will have a better chance of seeing it.

Thanks so much.  They are both in Dunhill and Kill are both in Waterford.

Hello,

I was interested in your posting as my great-grandparents were Johanna Power and Michael Whelan/Phelan from Kill.  As far as I am aware both are buried in Dunhill Church of the Sacred Heart.  Michael and Johanna had 3 sons including an Edmund which I noticed was the name of one of your relatives.  Michael died quite young and Johanna remarried a Cheasty.  I think that Johanna and Michael would have been born around 1880s as my grandfather was born around 1902 but I have no information on DOB or deaths.

I have not been able to find any information on any of the above and wondered if Johanna was one of your Powers?
I am eagerly awaiting the release of the Waterford part of the 1911 census to try to get a bit more info!

Thanks for your time.
Regards,

Claire

Hi Claire,
Thanks for that.  My grandfather was Edmund and there seems to have been an Edmund in every generation.
I have found a posting on Rootsweb that is a few years old but gives us the parents of the gr gr grandparents I mention (the parents of John Power) as Edmund Power and Joanna Phelan (which is sometimes Flinn/Flynn/Phelan/Whelan) so we could be related.  There are no dates for Edmund Power and Johanna Phelan or details of burial but their children, all born in Kill are Mary Power (no date) Thomas Power 2nd April 1825 Brigid Power born 11th Dec 1829 Maurice Power born 28th April 1830 John Power born 23rd October 1853 Martin Power born 11th Nov 1832 Johanna Power born 11th Jun 1833 and Edmund Power born 18th April 1835.
If any of this ties in with your family you will be up another branch on the tree (from your dates I mean)
Let me know if any of this helps you or if you want to know more on any of it.
I have searched the churchyard of Dunhill church and found nothing but I think there were a lot of burials where no headstone could be afforded.  Is it a guess that your relatives are buried there or has someone told you this is so?

Regards

Thanks for your reply.

My grandfather's half-brothers are buried there - one of them Paddy Cheasty died in 2004 and the other Geoff died around 2002.  Paddy was 87 when he died and they lived at Ballyleen which I believe to be in or very near to Kill.  When Paddy died, my grandfather's nephew told us that he was being buried near to his parents.  Apparently Johanna and Michael are buried together and her second husband is close by.  The newspaper obit from Paddy's death says "His funeral arrived at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Dunhill on Tuesday evening" so from this we assumed that they would all be there.

I am hoping to take a trip over there sometime soon as I would love to see for myself where they were all from - I went when I was younger but do not remember much other than visiting a farm where they lived!

I am waiting for the 1911 to find out more - my grandfather was Martin and his brothers were Edmund and James.  From what I understand, they were farmers but would have been able to afford headstones.  Maybe when I visit I will find out more.

If I find out anything to connect us then I'll let you know.  Thanks for your help so far.

Regards,

Claire

Good luck with that Claire.  You may find a piece of my heart in Dunhill, I didn't want to leave there!  All the thoughts and emotions of what has gone etc.  I think things were pretty desperate with them all at certain times, the famine etc.  which is when there are no headstones, The next generation all seem to have headstones in Kill and Dunhill, and those are the late 1800s early 1900's (which are the dates you are looking for).
I have heard them mention Ballyleen but am not sure where it is.  Ours are from Kill and Ballynageeragh, Dunhill.

Regards.

Hi again,
I don't know if I am telling you things you already know, but I have found bits of information from two sites.  One is www.coppercoastgeopark.com where they have a geneology section with lists of miners children, there are a few Whelans.  The other is www.waterfordcoco.ie where you can access the death reacords online, and I remember seeing a few Cheasty names.

I am fairly new to this so I may be giving you old news.

Thanks for the websites - I knew of the Waterford one but not the coppercoast one so will do a bit of searching there.

I seem to remember it being a lovely place but then I was young and there was a beach to play on so my memories are all of fun!!!  I'll let you know how I get on.

Good luck with your hunting.
